Seems this is one of their ideas to clean the air in preparation of next year's Olympic Games. Obviously, I am assuming this is bituminous coal.

Actually China is one of the few places anthracite is found too, I'd imagine though as you suggested it's bituminous. I've also seen some kind of coal "bricks" they use whih is some sort of processed coal, may just be the presssing. Possibly not even coal but charcoal.

Of course, some have "forge" types of burners outside their front doors to melt down your old computers and other electronics for the metals, etc. Somehow, I don't think, the coal thing is going to make a dent!

Interesting, but I don't think it will help with the smog problem in August when no one is using coal to heat their huts in the middle of summer! Sure it will help during winter, but at the rate China is building new 'soft' coal power plants were all gonna be alot closer to the beach here in NEPA

Most Chinese coal is a lesser quality of bituminous and worse, although they do have some anthracite (not much). Most homes use coal cakes to cook and heat their water. A friend of mine spent 3 months in China and he could not believe how bad the air was around the cities.

many people in China cook with coal, they use the coal oven like we use an electric range. No chimney, nothing.
