I would call Erie again and request the reason why not. They underwrite my HS Tarm wood boiler that used the same chimney as oil furnace. Just had to put high/low side temp on oil burner so it didn't kick on.

I got a good car insurance quote from Progressive, wanted home owners also. Even with drawings, mechanicals building permit, and county site visit / signed written approval of Harman TLC 2000 in 10 year old home. Progressive- no way - home owner installed. ( not a contractor). Some say try State Farm. Any others ? Thanks

If you're a military vet, USAA can't be beat at any level (home, auto, etc). I spoke to them prior to having my wood/coal furnace installed, and they were absolutely fine with the idea!

Progressive = ...... well, progressives running it. No thanks. Local auto body shop here refuses to work on your car if you have Progressive - says they are the WORST company they've ever dealt with in their 30+ years of business. If it were me, I'd stay the hell away from that company. If any company is going to invade your privacy, that would be the one.

I too have Erie and have no problems whatsoever. They sent me a questionnaire asking for clearance measurements, stove location, if stove was UL listed, if chimney was cleaned regularly., etc. They actually sent the questionnaire for a woodburning stove application so I'm not sure why they gave you a hard time about that......and your sidewalk, that makes no sense at all. I clarified with my agent that I burn coal and they said the woodburning questionnaire is standard paperwork for all coal/wood situations. No one ever came out to inspect it but I had it installed by a business which they also wanted to know the name of. Erie has been good to me. I have my homeowners and vehicles insured through them.

No problems with Homesite insurance. Adding my stove onto the policy was easier than trying to talk to a computer at Verizon :x . Just in case, I did have everything inspected anyway.

Excellent company! I am a vet and have USAA, I use them for most of my financial needs. I couldn't be happier with them.

I am too but never used them. Good to know. This year my company sent some jamoke round to "inspect" the house. Later I get a call from the agent saying I have to bump my coverage up almost double what it was (I was underinsured ) then that I must paint some soffets and window trim or they won't renew! Needless to say, as soon as I agreed to the new evaluation, the painting issue went away and the new policy came in the mail.

I just switched from Alstate to USAA and am happy so far, they don't care about wood, coal or whatever I burn. Also as that are rated AAAA+

I had state farm insurance and they wouid charge me extra to insure my home with a solid fuel burning appliance. I changed to Liberty Mutual and there is none of that. They don't penalize for coal or wood.
