Van Wert VA600 auger set up ...

PostBy: bsteckel On: Mon Aug 06, 2012 6:26 pm

i was researching coal bins and noticed Vermontday's EFM Bulk Bag feed idea as seen here EFM 520 Install with skid/bulk bags feed. This is the one where he made his own skids with a bulk bag holding coal .. a box was made to attach to the floor, the bag feeds the box on the floor and the auger tube goes into the box. Does anyone know how the auger feed tube on a Van Wert compares to the feed tube of an EFM? Does the Van Wert auger go down that close to the floor. Since my Van Wert is in pieces in my gargage, I cannot reference how the auger tube comes out, at what angle, and how close to the floor. I would like to use his idea, but not sure it will work with my boiler.

thanks,

Brad

Sure it will work if,,,,,,,,,,. You will need to have a long enough auger to decrease the angle of the auger in relation to the floor. The farther away from the boiler, the better it would work. The auger angle can be adjusted up or down by simply loosening up several set screws. The thing is, most Van Werts have shorter augers. They are nice if there isn't much :) space.

The end of the auger on our 1200 is about 3 foot off the boiler. You would easily be able to do that. I considered it myself but figured it was going to take a lot more space than normal bin.

thanks for the info. it is hard to get an idea when looking at all the parts disassembled on my garage floor. hopefully i will be able to restore this unit once i get a garage addition built so i have some room to work :D that bulk feed idea looks like it works well, but space is needed. the nice part is as you use the bags, they can be stored taking up less room.

I never really looked, the 600 has the same assembly on the back as the 1200? I can get better pictures if you need them.

If you look at the auger tube you can figure the one end will be dead center on the boiler. Least that is the way it is on the 1200. There's a minimal amount of adjustment for the elevation but you should be able to get it right against the ground if you need too.
