The dams cost more to run & maintain than what little electric they produce.

What does the utility concerned have to say? Are they losing money on the dams?

PacifiCorp owns the dams & has been trying for over a decade to get the OK to remove them, they already have replacement generation up & running & the dams cost more than make. Probably shouldn't have been built in the first place, at times they don't even have enough water flow to produce power.

Then it seems to me that those who benefit from the dam should pay the maintenance or let it go. What was the valley like before the dam? Seems like a lot of water to inundate a whole valley. Wont a controlled release just return the river bed to what it was?

It's mostly different tribes, farmers & ranches who actually got together on their own to help support tearing them down, from what I could find the only ones against are the Counties & Local Gov. that all get taxes & water fees from the agreements, it was always an Indian way of life for hundreds of years until the white man came along & destroyed the beaver which destroyed the flood control which brought farming & ranching along with the gold rush & hydro mining. The absolute bottom line is the tax payer will end up footing the bill for something that never should have been. Got to say the electric users have been paying a surcharge for dam removal as well.
