Taking Screenshots

Taking Screenshots

This question came up in a PM, how to take screenshots. For Vista and later versions of Windows there is the snipping tool but this method will work with any version.

  • To take a screenshot of the entire screen click the prtscrn (print screen) button on keyboard.
  • Alternately to take a screenshot of just the active window hold the alt key and hit the prtscrn key.
  • You'll now have a copy of this on the clipboard, open any image editing program and you can paste the image into it. For example Paint

From there is options like cropping and what you're going to save it as,. Generally speaking I'd suggest .gif for screenshots with any tool except Paint. Save as .jpg instead with paint.

It doesn't do anything you can see when you hit the button, it just places an image on the clipboard. You still have to open an image editor like Paint, paste the image and then save it.

If you have Vista or higher the directions are here for the snipping tool: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... reen-shots

You can do it with most image editors, Irfanview for example. Irfanview is great utility program for many purposes like batch resizing/renaming images.

I've had that program for a while, since you told me about it probably 3 or 4 years ago. Didn't know I could use that either. Computers aren't my forte I guess ..

Mac users like me have "Grab", it's very easy to use, like most Apple stuff. :D I can take a screen shot, like below, or capture individual windows.
