I doubt the stainless will hold up either. I would start looking for a cast manhole grate to see if it could be modified to work in your unit. Perhaps by cutting it into strips and interlocking the fingers it could be workable. You may have about 6-8 grates across the bottom. They are about 2" thick and could do the trick cheaply.

Look at some hand feed stove while on your pilgramage to Pa... You will see how a good anthracite coal burning firebox is made.

A Clinker is molten ash fused together.. It is the result of hot fires where the ash has been jammed together where it then sticks together. The Clinker has a lot of molten glass, rocks, sand etc... It is usually hard, and blocks airflow through the grates..

If you have 1" rebar with 6" spacing, you will have to rebuild your grates system to use coal.. I used a piece of cast iron floor drain for my grate, it had 3/4' x 6" slots. Some nut coal could fall through the slots.
