August 2012 Coal Price

I just bought a full skid of bagged Blaschak nut 2400 lbs for $348 cash. One more skid and I'll be good for the season. I had a ton left over from last year.

I should have mentioned that is the pick up price.

We're still at $240.00 per-3 ton minimum--plus $20.00 delivery per truck load

I think transportation cost is probably more to central CT than you area. Although that is just a guess.

Yep, me thinks you are right on the money with that. We're a straight shot up 81 N. about 1 1/2 hrs give or take from coal country

Fred, just wondering how fast you drive getting to coal country.... i live about an hour south of you, and coal country is stilll a good hour+ south of me.(Hazelton,Mcadoo area). Got this winters coal from place called Chevry's, in Plymouth area, this past spring. 160 a ton bulk, picked up with F550 borrowed from friend, fuel was 50.00 to and back. burned it late in season, it burned real good(hot) and held fire longer at low demand from boiler. still want to go get another ton & a half, that way i have just over 4.5 tons for winter. Been thinking about building a a pit box so i can go down with tri axle get 15 tons. You know like silage, green chop pits used on farms.

Just figuring down to the Wilkes Barre/Scranton area. I wonder how a gravity wagon would tow down & back full?

Is that legal? Sounds like a great (albeit rather unsafe) idea if you are close enough (as in very extremely close) though, and if the ground is flat, and the road is straight.

It's been a good 30 years since I was last in Wilkes Barre and the surrounding area, so I'll just have to take your word for it Fred. If anyone could make it with a full load of coal in a gravity wagon, it would have to be you! Heck, you could even do it with a grain cart!

Fred, aren't you and the 8-N relegated to the 'secondary roads? Did you re-power the 8-N? Those are loooong hills for the little 4 banger. Last I checked, there were no brakes on the Gravity Wagon.......
Smitty has an Allison V-12 at home that might fit.......and I have a V-12 Detroit in an Air Compressor you could use.

WN, I figure the round trip should take about a week, so yes I will have to map out a secondary road route--I'm holding off till mid next week so I don't get bogged down with all the labor day traffic--PS--I hooked up a stick friction brake for the gravity feed just to keep everything legal

The panic is about to set in.....a few leaves blowing around; fuel prices are high...politics are over the top, Natural Gas could have some supply issues....and we will probably run out of Coal in a couple hundred years......wring those hands, folks!!

The oil guys are not fearing much....they have it, you HAVE to have it unless you made other plans... Even the State of NH says it is too late to burn green wood cut after August 15th.....store it for next year they say.
Coal is 315/339 a ton up here, so feel lucky if you live nearer the I-81 corridor. Still half the price of oil.
Here is a novel idea Fred.....In these modern times, they have BIG trucks that can make your delivery....in only a few hours, and while that 'Flint-Stone Brake Modification' may be legal in New York State, the DOT boys and girls in the Keystone State has some reservations with it. ...but what the heck, the 'trip' is REALLY what you are going to enjoy....... (Is Hickory the best brake lever...or will the Mighty Oak take it better?)


Today is a '10' on the 'hayin' computer'; NO BTU's required to stay warm, and enough Yuenglings in the fridge for the weekend.....life is good!

I used to burn Corn about 6 years ago when the price was much more reasonable than where it is now and always used my gravity wagon for that. A cubic yard of coal and a cubic yard of corn differs to the tune of around 1000 lbs so I probably wouldn't want to top the gravity wagon off like I would with corn but certainly wouldn't have any issues using the bin wagon to haul coal really.

Especially if it has a good running gear on it.

We are getting a TT load for $260.00 a ton. 5.00 less then last year.
