Forum Tips and Tricks

PostBy: Richard S. On: Sun Sep 02, 2012 11:47 pm

I'll be adding a some tips and tricks every so often to this thread. Lots of features people aren't aware of.

I'm going to lock this topic to keep it easy to read but you can post questions here: Forum Tips and Tricks Discussion

Linking directly to a particular post.
You can link to any post directly by right clicking the title of that post which is usually preceded by "RE:", after right clicking the terminology may vary slightly depending on your browser but it will be something similar to "Copy link location" which is used in Firefox. For example the link for this topic is:

Forum Tips and Tricks
Code: Select all
http://nepacrossroads.com/about25497.html

The link for this particular post is:

Forum Tips and Tricks
Code: Select all
http://nepacrossroads.com/about25497.html#p306001

The first link just loads the page like normal, try click the second link. It will auto scroll the page right to the post itself.

The Fast Way to Quote a Snippet of Text

If a post you wish to quote is one of the last 15 replies instead of hitting the quote button the post you can hit click reply like you normally do. On the bottom of the page you'll find the last 15 posts made,. From here you can quote an entire post, a snippet of text from the post or even multiple posts. After hitting the post reply button first click the posting pane to place the cursor when you want the quote to appear. Scroll down to the bottom to view the topic review pane. You can quote an individual post by clicking the quote button or if you just want to quote a snippet of text highlight what you want to quote and then hit the quote button.

The Word Censor

The word censor is a user option that is on by default, it can be turned off in the control panel.

Smilie Codes
The codes for smilies can be typed out if you can remember them. Every smilie code begins and ends with a colon and has a short snippet of text between the colons. Typing this:

Code: Select all
  :bang: :mad3:

Produces this:

Display Options
You can change the appearance of posts, for example you can hide signatures. These options are available in the control panel.

Control panel link at top >> Preferences Tab >> Display options link on left

Posting Links

Links that are posted to pages are automatically turned into clickable links, you do not need to use the URL bbcode. When copying a link from another page either use the address bar or right click the link and select "Copy link location" or similar text depending on your browser. You can just copy the link text displayed on the page in some cases but they are often shortened as they are here and will not work, for example this link:

Code: Select all
https://www.google.com/search?q=coal+forum&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Will be displayed like this, note the ellipses:

https://www.google.com/search?q=coal+fo ... =firefox-a

You only need to use the URL bbcode if you want link text, for example:

Code: Select all
[url=https://www.google.com/search?q=coal+forum&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a]Google Search for the Term "Coal Forum"[/url]

Example from above: Google Search for the Term "Coal Forum"

Note that all internal links are automatically given link text of the topic title.

What if you don't want the link to be clickable?
Check the "Do not automatically parse URLs" on the options tab and it will appear as plain text

What if you want one link to be clickable and another plain text?
Check the "Do not automatically parse URLs" on the options tab and wrap the link you want clickable with the URL bbcode.

Finding all the posts you Started

You can find all the topics you participated in but what if you wanted just the topics you started. There is no built in feature for that but you can do it through a custom search.

Click the magnifying glass in the upper right to open up the forum search, Image

  • Next to "Search for author" put your username (or any username)
  • Next to "Search Within" select "First post of topic only"
  • Next to "Display results as" select "Topics"
  • Click the search button.
