New hearth for my new stove!

Today I was able to get everyone together to build the new hearth in my basement. I wanted something better than the old housekeeping pad from an old boiler for my new stove.

Here's the before pic, with the Dutchwest stove in place :



Here's the new hearth, just after we finished :



Next week I'm going to put the stove up and fit some new pipe, I'll be sure to get more pics once the stove is in place!

Not too many, my dad used to work in the masonry trade, and my uncle and cousin currently do masonry work for a living. I only laid two brick, I spend most of the time mixing mortar and lugging it down the stairs. It's amazing how easy skilled tradesmen make the job look, until you try it yourself!

So on another note, I need to figure out what kind of stove pipe I'm going to use. The wooden beam that supports the 1st floor is 11" diagonally from the crock. I hear these DS's have fairly low stack temps, but I think to be safe, I should rule out single wall pipe. I had some old Duravent on the dutchwest last heating season, but I will need to get a different setup for the DS1500 circulator.

I was happy with the performance of the Duravent, but I wasn't sure if there was a better (and possibly cheaper) solution.

you might be able to install a heat sheild from the ceiling.Someone with more experince with heat sheilds can tell you how to make one. Nice brick work

Is that where the new DS Machine 1500 is going LD? Looks like a nice job on the brickwork. Your right abou the Pro's. I had to make a new thimble location last year and managed it but my friend is a mason and was over the house and put the 8 courses of a pyramid on the top (That I had removed) in about 30 minutes flat. I had already chipped the old morter off and just mixed the mud and watched. Once they get into the rhythm, they just slap, tap, scrape and onto the next one!

Got the stove up on the hearth.... Now I just need the stove pipe, and finish my coal bin! I'm NOT lugging it down the steps in 5 gallon buckets again!

That DS looks ALOT bigger now that it's in place!!

Regarding the heat shield...Just get the next size up in single wall flue pipe and put your "in use" single wall flue pipe through it. Then use a few screws to space the larger pipe from the smaller pipe for air circulation.

For example...my flue pipe for the stoker in the workshop is 6" going through the thimble. The drywall ceiling is closer than code, I forget the exact measurements. I got a 2' section of 8" and put the 6" through it. I then used 1" hex head self tappers bottomed out through the 8" but NOT into the 6". I used 9 self tappers, 3 in a line across the top 2/3 of the 8" flue pipe and the 8" uses the screws to just sit on the 6" with a 1" gap all the way around and at the and where the thimble is to allow for air circulation. The 8" does not get hot at all, I can put my hand on it during a full burn and it is barely warmer than body temp.

I like to start with a full brick on the bottom row - yours is showing a 1/2. Oh well, tear down & rebuild.
