Coal delivery from PA to MA?

PostBy: daluds On: Sun Sep 09, 2012 7:18 pm

The coal prices are high in MA. Does anyone know if there is a way to buy 1.25 ton pallets of bagged rice coal from PA and have it shipped via train/truck to MA? What would the minimum shipment be for pallets?

Thanks,

Dave

18 pallets, 22.5 tons per load if you buy it from Penn Keystone or Kimmels.

How far are you from Lykens, PA and what is your local bagged coal price?

Any idea how much the shipping charge is ? I got a price from the guy Newport aggregate recommended . 1,575 $ just the delivery charge to Lunenburg MA. TT load . I have gotten mine from a guy in baldwinville the last two years . He was 255-260 / ton loose picked up . At the end of last year he said his supplier in PA want out of business . He found someone new . He said he needed to raise his price to 275 $ I haven't talked to him since about jan. he does sell bagged . He bags them himself . I think he gets about an extra 25$/ ton for bagged . He also delivers loose or bagged . Not sure how much he charges or how far he will deliver . Ask for Ernie 978-939-8969 C and T coal great guy .

Local place is selling for $335 per ton.

http://www.woodpelletsexperts.com/cs-pricing.html

I typically get it for $270 per ton plus delivery fee, but they increased their prices this summer so I want to look for alternate places to buy rice coal.

Lykens PA is 355 miles from Northborough, MA where I live.

Thanks,

Dave

Shipping will depend on your particular location, and of course the distance. $2.75 per mile is probably in the ballpark, but if you are serious about a load just call and ask for a quote.

Dave

I know myself and another person on the North Shore would take 1 ton each. Perhaps more.

The biggest problem is there just aren't that many people burning coal in Taxachusetts. The South shore/Cape and points West seem to have the bulk of coal burners and just a handful of us here on the North Shore. The cost of a ton here is much higher than it should be but then nearly everything in this cursed State is overpriced.

I would love to get a group together and have a TT of mixed bags sent up from PA. If we rounded up enough people I am sure a place to unload would present itself as well.

Just 3 to 5 more years left in the cesspool known as MA and my butt is OUT OF HERE and I am taking the Chubby with me. The dog too as well as the evil red headed Italian wife in tow. WAGONS WEST!

If you want to start a tally on who is in I will take 2 tons of either stove, nut or pea. I am flexible.

My brother lives in Lunenburg MA . He has a bobcat with a bucket or forks and lots of room to off load . He also has an f-450 dump truck if someone needs a delivery . I could take 6-8 tons of nut . I'd really like to make this work .

Nice, Mason - I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future. No cash this year for anything though - we'll see how next season goes.

I would love to jump in also for some Nut coal but I would not have a way to transport it to my house from the drop point.

I bought two pallets form Monson Lumber last year to try the famous Santa coal everyone mentioned here. Paid about $70 to get it here. Still cheaper than Robbins Garden Center in Oxford. They delivered it right to my back door with the fork truck (biggest one I ever saw. Twice as large as the ones HD uses). All I needed to do was chuck it in the cellar. :)

Before you guys all go crazy about buying a TT load, get your money ready. The TT driver will NOT want to make any additional stops without some compensation. You can mix and match your delivery with several sizes, HOWEVER, the size of the pallets will not be one ton, they will be 2500 lbs. No, they won't lick your boots if you want a one ton pallet, they will just charge you more. It takes a LARGE skid steer to do a 2500 lb lift and maneuver it around.....a fork truck had better have SOLID footing, so wherever and whenever you get a delivery, make DAMNED sure it is accessible and safe. Coal bagged at the plants will be in the 240/ton range and 45 to 60 a ton delivery IF everything goes well.
Certified or bank checks.....a tip for the driver is a nice thing to do, also. Sooooo, you are looking at 285-300 a ton in Conn and Mass, delivered to one spot.....then distribution. So If your local guy is 319 to 329/ton, you can see that does not leave much room for all the crap you have to deal with. A bulk load of one size saves money, however you better have a good spot to store and load from. Would any of you want to take a $5200.00 cost and sit on it for 20.00 a ton return? Sam's Club would laugh at you for trying it. The is not to scare anyone, just to make you understand that there isn't much to save in the short term.
