I doubt a hot water boiler could even explode in the first place, never mind do that kind of damage. A steam boiler, ahhh.......... something else is going on here.

Yeah there was a follow up on the news tonight. The owners claim they were asleep when it happened, yet the bedroom was blown into the back yard. The explosion killed the family dog, so there is obviously more to this story. Where's Paul Harvey when you need him!

Saw some videos at a boiler course we took at work. At a school in the kitchen, a maintenance worker plugged the prv on an electric hot water heater because it was constantly dripping a bit. The t stat was defective and was over heating the water and building the pressure. When the 30 gallon unit blew(after hours) it took out block walls! Also saw some big boilers ( 500 hp and up) that had failed due to safety's being jumped out, operator error etc.... leveled whole building and people died!

I wonder if the family dog tied himself to the furnace in a suicide attempt...

Excuse me but I sped through the article, then went back and read it slowly twice and see no where does it state "Coal fired or Wood fired Furnace".
All it says is furnace, so in my humble opion it could mean Propane or Natural Gas furnace.
Correct?

the second clip was cool. I don't think that in real life it is possible though, you'd think that a faucet washer or solder joint or something would fail before the tank got up to 350psi.

Richard:
Speaking of blasting caps, years ago I knew a fellow up in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. He heated his home and cooked his food with wood which was neatly stacked on his property. One year he had a problem with someone stealing his wood by the carload.

He carefully used an auger bit to drill a hole in one piece of wood into which he inserted a blasting cap. He put that "special" chunk of wood back on the pile and waited. Eventually, more wood was stolen, including the "special" piece. However, that was the last wood that was ever stolen from him!
