Obama has a Migraine: Chicago School Strike

Pretty much screwed no matter what position he takes isn't he? It's going to be interesting watch him tap dance around this topic.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago teachers' strike is putting President Barack Obama's re-election campaign in a bind, pitting unions loyal to him against officials with ties to the White House.

The Obama camp needs to be careful not to upset the unions, which it needs for campaign funds and to do ground work leading up to the November 6 election, while not alienating independent voters who are worried about the Democrats being too close to powerful labor groups.

While not directly involved, Obama is associated in many minds with local politics in his hometown, where one of his current cabinet members, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, formerly oversaw the schools and now endorses the changes that have angered teachers.

And Mayor Rahm Emanuel is a former Obama chief of staff.

Which way do younz want it, you complain about too much Gov. & then complain about Gov. not stepping in when they have nothing to do with it.

Sam what I'm commenting on here is the Democratic support for the unions. If this strike continues it's inevitable that Obama's views on this matter will be asked. There is almost no support from the general public for this strike. Does he support the union and throw his old top aide under the bus along with throwing away votes ? -or- Does he throw his support against the union?

As I said no matter what position he takes he's screwed either way and if this strike continues I don't think a comment playing both sides is going to suffice.

those "unions" referred to here, are, at the end of the day, middle class people. Too bad so many middle class people have forgotten who is on their side, and who is on big money's side, all in the name of party name. shameful.

Those unions get paid out of the middle class's pocket. Maybe the middle class can't afford to keep funding them at ANY cost?

You are you suggesting the Democrat leaders in Chicago are not on the side of the middle class and doing this in the name of the party? Perhaps a recall of Rahm Emanuel is in order?

Average teacher pay is $76,000 a year. The school system has a $665 million budget deficit. Teachers voted in June to authorize a strike if a new agreement could not be reached.

That doesn't include benefits, average pay including benefits probably tops 100K.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/chicago-tea ... on-strike/

The district had been offering a raise of 2 percent a year for four years. The union called that offer unacceptable — particularly after Emanuel last year canceled a previously negotiated 4 percent pay raise, citing budget problems.

The union countered by asking for a 30 percent pay raise over two years, followed by a request for a 25 percent increase over two years. Just weeks ago, Lewis told delegates the union had adjusted its demand and was asking for a 19 percent pay raise in the contract's first year.

There is no more money except debt unless there is change in the state legislation, the school taxes are at the highest legal level. They can't raise them anymore even if if they wanted too.

Me thinks they need someone like Scott Walker from Wisconsin to come down and show them how it's done. Average yearly pay 75k per year for a 10 month a year job and killer bennys sign me up! :o :eek2: Bring in a union buster.

You're missing the point, they don't need Republican Scott Walker to do anything because we have Democrat and former presidential top aide Rahm Emanuel leading the charge. That's what makes HC's post above so humorous because he's trying to spin this off on the Republicans, they have nothing to do with this other than sitting on the sidelines in a deck chair eating popcorn watching the show.

I don't know how IL. differs from any other place but first strike in 25 years says something as well as the salary, until now it's most likely been throw more money out there & the issues go away. IMO school boards as well as the teachers unions have become too powerful simply because they always got what they wanted. This should have been totally resolved before the school year began or both sides would be locked into talks after a certain date until it's resolved & it all should be made public, has very little to do with politics & much to do with greed. Gotta wonder what the school board members get for a totally part time job.

Easy fix. Let them strike and fire their asses. No public union should have the right to strike.

Franco, where does that stop, do we go back in time where everybody has to work until they die? There was a time where you got Co. vouchers for the Co. store & lived in a Co. house, if you died of got killed on the job & had no male child old or big enough to take over the fathers job the family was evicted. You really think that in this day & age Co.s would pay a fair wage? Like I said when times were good everyone allowed both labor & management to get too powerful & just pass on increases in price or tax, now in bad times it comes back to haunt but the cost of living never seems to come down.

It stops when government unions have no right to strike. Has nothing to do with unions in private industry. Monopoly by either labor or management are equally bad. Both lead to abuse. In private industry when labor costs get too great it can no longer compete, it goes out of business or moves overseas. In effect the union loses when jobs disappear. There is no such pressure with government unions. Fire them if they strike. We don't need socialist swine teaching our children.

I understand what you are saying but you are only faulting one side when the management side can be equally at fault.
Do you also think that perhaps the Charter Schools are getting way more than their fair share of the pie forcing more cuts in the public school system which is an oxymoron since it all comes from the same pot of tax payer money?

When government advertises jobs there is a set of requirements for the job and it is spelled out clearly what compensation will be. There is competition for these jobs and usually no shortage of applicants. Anyone is free to accept or reject the conditions. If they decide to strike then government should be free also to replace them. Government unions have no right to destroy their communities with extortion like demands.

There should be no charter schools, only neighborhood schools.
