PostBy: firecatf7333 On: Thu Sep 20, 2012 9:35 pm

I live between rochester and syracuse ny. I'd like to buy a semi load of bagged coal. Anyone know who i can contact and what price i can expect to pay. We burn rice coal. I got a price from penn coal for

229 a ton bagged plus 28/ton for delivery.

Thanks

I have bought three loads from them...good price, good product. I doubt you will find a better price on bagged coal, but you can try contacting your local trucking companies to see if they can do better on the trucking.

I assume you are referring to the first post regarding Penn Coal? 18 pallets, 22.5 tons to a load.

Usually 18 pallets of 2400 or 2500lbs, depending on the order. That allows for the max legal load, AND if you are not an idiot, more cost effective than shipping 1 ton pallets.

Thanks, I'm about an hour south of there and the local place delivers at $280 a ton bagged and oiled. Not sure buying that big of a load would be worthwhile for me since I only burn about 4 ton a year on average.

I understand, however if a bunch of friends get together you could make a load work. The delivered and oiled price seems extremely fair, so you may be in the right place for your needs right now.
The margins are small, and the aggravation immense for the short dollar that coal affords a dealer. We are at 325 to 405/ton in my area, so fell VERY lucky!

Assuming the coal burns decent, $280 per ton for bagged coal is very fair...especially if that is the delivered price. Do you want to put up almost 6k to save $60 per year? If you have to rent a forklift or skidsteer to handle the pallets the math gets even worse...my vote is to support your local guys and stay warm.
