Yes he did, they haven't said anything about the sound barrier yet but the indicator on the TV looked like it was around there.

I almost think he purposely didnt take the longest free fall time from Kittinger. If that was the case it was a really great thing to do for him. That was an incredible feat. Glad things went so well.

The indicator showed 725MPH WOW should be plenty enough at that altitude. I wonder if he would feel the soundwave.

The speed of sound changes as you move thru the atmosphere. At 100,000 Ft, the sound barrrier is around 690 mph.

Does the speed of sound vary with altitude or atmospheric pressure, with temperature, humidity, (etc...), or is is a constant?

The speed of sound is affected by temperature. Where the air is colder, sound travels more slowly

Chris was right, this article got beyond me in the first paragraph:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound

looks like he did it:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/14/us/skydiver-record- ... index.html

I was thinking he lost the longest freefall record due to his fogged visor, he deployed at about a mile up.
