The golden rule is being replaced by the platinum rule

The golden rule is being replaced by the platinum rule

This could be the worlds problem in a nutshell. The golden rule is being replaced by the platinum rule.

Golden rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Platinum rule: Do unto others as they would have you do unto them.

I was hoping this would remain civil and take a more serious path. Though I take no credit for the platinum rule (having first heard it on the radio this morning on my way to work), it does seem to be the way of things these days.

It's all over the Internet that the platinum rule (in several iterations, all essentially following the theme of the iteration that I posted) is far superior to the golden rule (which to be fair also exists in multiple iterations). The Platinum rule is being promoted as being more fair and sensitive, and less stuck up. Am I the only one who perceives something evil within the platinum rule? Do you agree with many today that we should all teach it to our children instead of and in place of the golden rule? I can imagine that it is already being drummed into them in public schools, either subliminally and indirectly, or straight up and direct.

That would seem to imply that everyone has there own "thing". And you have to let them do it. It sounds like the mantra my English teacher had on the wall in my home room. Looooong time ago. It said, "I'm Ok, Your Ok" She was a progressive for sure.

Is your assertion that there is only ONE path people may walk? The "correct" path for lack of a better term?

Or are there infinite paths due to the fact that we are all individuals?

When I read the original post I thought it was meant to be funny.

Since it is serious then it is just plain nuts. You are morally obliged to treat people with fairness and respect. You have no obligation to go beyond that and accede to someones demands or wishes.

I'm not surprised the Golden Rule is being warped. After all, anything religion is bad nowadays ... and that phrase ... or rule ... was lifted from the bible.

I'm not surprised at all.

And yes - any twisting of the Golden Rule IS EVIL.

Sorry for being in a jovial mood. I couldn't percieve your intent from that post.

I'll get deadly serious. For some reason that reminded me of the Annie Lennox lyrics:

some of them want to abuse you
some of them want to be abused

Point is, how are you supposed to know what others would have you do unto them?

A stranger payed me a compliment about my work today; I just said thanks I like to hear that.

There's a thing going around that you should pay people sincere compliments. Works for me.

Ultimately one leads to a melting pot, and one promotes the total separation of cultures, etc... Clearly we once promoted and took great pride in the cultural melting pot concept of the USA, whereas now we promote everyones right to maintain and flaunt differences.

Not at all Jpete, what gave you that Idea??? It implies that each person should be enabled and allowed to pursue whatever makes them happy. Gay marriage, drug use, pedophiles, whatever. Keep your business to yourself and out of other peoples lives. I saw plenty of that attitude with old hippies and young offspring of hippies, etc. out in the boonies where things get a little sketchy. It is a reversal of my parents generation and the one before them.

I don't understand how you can infer that from the golden/platinum statement.

I just think there are too many impoverished people in the world, give them something to eat, they have more babies. Let em starve, it's inhumane. Mention sterilization, it's barbaric. Crazy times but this country has been through worse I guess. I don't have any answers.
If I'm in a foul mood, the whole world seems foul.
If I remember to rely on God, my days seem to go easier, and sometimes with awe and gratitude.
Another saying or prayer:
"God goes before me to make the crooked places straight."

Easier to adhere to when things are going good, harder to believe when the chips are down.

But each person SHOULD be enabled to pursue what makes them happy. It says so right there in the Declaration of Independence.

Apart from pedophiles, which always seem to get thrown in, all that other stuff is perfectly fine.

Like you said, "keep your business to yourself and out of other peoples lives." Is that a one way street?

Not sure about your attitude on this one Jpete.
I didn't say I cared one hoot about all the above "things" that make people happy. However, many things are against the law that make people happy, and many things that make people happy dont stay in the bedroom or out of sight. In fact, many things are done to other people that make some happy, (Pedophiles), that make many others unhappy. We are a nation of laws and they have gotten out of line and to intrusive in many ways. But no one would like an absence of laws.
Most states cannot get rid of the old Blue laws that are still on the books and the religious people would like to strengthen them. I don't think the founders thought preying on little boys in the vestry was a freedom to pursue happiness issue.
I had to read the rule over and over to get my head around it and the best way I can describe it is," Whatever I want to do to make me happy is non of your business and is all right, and the same for you." Society wont go far with that as the mantra. Maybe the Salem witch hunts will return.

I'd like an absence of most laws.

I have no idea what your witch hunt reference is. That was the government enforcing their laws.
