Sales tax on Coal

PostBy: lsayre On: Fri Oct 19, 2012 6:47 pm

In Ohio we pay the standard sales tax rate on coal. I believe in PA there is no sales tax on coal. How about the other States?

In MN, no tax on any home heating fuel, but other buildings heat is taxed. No tax on clothing, unprepared food, some services are and some arent, and prescription drugs. 6.87% on everything else and some towns have their own small taxes added too.

They often check truckers leaving equipment auctions looking for untaxed fuel oil (deisel) in their gas tanks. they fine the crap out of them, drain their tanks and tow their trucks. So having untaxed oil has its downfalls for some people to.

 Why can't you all just be quiet, I feel for those that pay tax on this or that but I think at times we should leave well enough alone. We all know how Gov. works, once a tax always a tax if we point out a tax that is or isn't paid somewhere else we all know damn well Gov. isn't going to get rid of a tax but they will add one on saying other states pay on a certain item. :shh:

Most of the counties in Ohio are at 7%. The county I live in is fortunately at only 6.5%. Cuyahoga County (where Cleveland is located) is the highest at 7.75%.

Unfortunately, if I purchase coal from a county with a 7% tax rate, that is what I'm taxed at.

No sales tax on fuel used for heating in Maryland. Doesn't matter what kind, oil, natural gas, propane, wood or coal. At one time it was taxed, but it was eliminated during the Arab oil embargo years.

There;s not supposed to be any sales taxes on necessities: heat, clothing, or food (as long as it wasn't prepared FOR you). If your supplier is taxing you on coal I'd demand all the tax money back!

Exempt items

Fuels: Charcoal; Combustible fireplace logs; Firewood, kindling; Lighter fluid for grills; Propane gas for grills
Gas, steam, electricity and heating fuel
