Looks like I need one :( The used one I installed last year leaked right off the bat. I didn't worry about it because there was no way I was going to get enough time to get it hooked up. So I put a couple pipe plugs in it.

Well, fast forward to today. Pulled it out and rigged up a connection to the house water supply. Sure enough, find a crack in the copper which I soldered up. Dried the coil real good with the torch and hooked it back up to the water supply. There are at least a dozen more pin holes that are weeping barely enough to create a drip. I know this story all too well as my copper house piping is doing much the same and is getting replaced with pex.

So what is the going rate for a new coil for a highboy? And has anyone had any success replacing the finned copper with soft copper tubing of roughly the same length?

You will not get get nearly the same performance with plain soft copper compared to the finned design of the original.
