Crawford #40 Base Heater Coal Stove

PostBy: BPatrick On: Thu Nov 08, 2012 4:54 pm

Hello all,

I'm trying to find a picture of this heater. My grandfather, who has passed away, left me a farm house and it needed a little tlc. He had some WWII buddies from out east and they brought him this Crawford #40 Base Heater Coal Stove. I see it in old pictures in the background, but nothing closeup. That stove disappeared out of that house years ago and I wanted to put one back in, in the original spot. I figured they were common back in the day and it turns out its a very regional east coast stove. I live in Southwest lower Michigan and can't source one, or even a picture of one anywhere. I've spent hours searching google and the internet searching for a picture of a restored Crawford # 40 Base Heater Coal Stove and cannot find it. If anyone knows where one is and could get me a picture it would be greatly appreciated. My father is getting older and will move in with me and this would be a great surprise to have a coal stove like the one he grew up with. Thanks, in advance, for your help with this. I'm looking to buy one that is in restored working condition as I want to heat the great room with it.

Also call Emery at Antique Stove Hospital. He deals in Crawfords. Google Antique Stove Hospital and also Barnstable Stove Shop. Another source is Bryant Stove Store in Maine.
Crawfords are among the top stoves ever made. If I didn't have a Glenwood I would have a Crawford. Crawford 40's are very large stoves. I saw a 30 on Craigslist not long ago. They turn up, but; the places mentioned will obtain one and restore it for you if they don't have it in stock. You may have a little wait because the large ones like a 40 are not as common as the smaller crawfords.

Thanks for the help. I've spoken to Emery and he is looking for one and is very knowledge and seems like a great guy. He said they were a great stove and work great and they were beautiful...I thought he was trying to sell me one, then he says, I don't have one so I'll have to look around. It made me feel great because he was giving me his honest opinion and not trying to sell me something different. Please, anyone on this site, don't take this the wrong way but Emery said while Glenwoods were good stoves, a couple of manufacturers did a better job of base heaters. I don't know anything about these stoves and I'm learning and fascinated by the stoves and hope to be burning one soon. I've seen some beautiful Glenwood stoves and I think it'd be great to have one. I'm trying to put the house back for my father so this Crawford stove is very important...this man is everything to me and if I can do this for him he will see how hard I tried to source one and it will show my love for my father. You can tell your dad you love him, and he wouldn't love me less if I didn't do this; but I know how much he like this stove and I'm so excited I'm getting closer to sourcing one. I've looked on both the websites and haven't seen one yet so I'll keep looking, I was hoping that antique aficiando's would maybe know where I could see a picture of one.

Crawfords are indeed beautiful and are among the best stoves ever made, as is the Glenwood. You will find one, be patient and diligent. Check here every now and then to see if any of us stumble across one. I am looking all the time and I find stoves that I would have if I didn't have the ones I have now. If I gave into it. I would have a house full of stoves. I only need one, but have two.

BPatrick. Very nice to read you.
Be patient and you will find exactly what you want to. And if I say that it's because I'm sure of it. I looked for a much more rare stove, a Baltimore Heater for about one year and finally found one. Keep on searching, keep on asking to as many antique stoves dealers as you can if they have one, but keep on... Many guys on the forum will help you to realise that great dream.
An other place to ask is: Gingercreek Antique Stoves.
Good luck.

I looked at Ginger Creek but will look again. I might have sourced a #40 or #50 Crawford. The guy said that the #40 is big and the #50 is huge. Hopefully the #40 is available because that would be the last piece of the puzzle so to speak Thank you all for all your help. I've seen a lot of Glenwood stoves and they are beautiful...if I cannot find the Crawford, a Glenwood would look great. Emery said that from 1900-1920 in New England alone there were 10,000 different stoves made. I've got a lot of looking to do!

You mentioned that you wanted to heat the great room with a Crawford 40. It will heat a lot more than the one room. These are whole house heaters.

I'm aware that this is a big stove. The room it is going in is a 1,800 sq.' room with 13' high ceilings that are faulted at 13'. This room is huge and it has two openings to the rest of the house. One door opens to the formal dining room and the other to our bedroom. There are two back rooms and they sometimes need a space heater when they are cold.

At this point I'm trying to find a picture of a Crawford #40 base heater coal stove. Every person besides Emery, I talk to say that they aren't common and they've never had one, while Emery says that they were common in New England. Just a nice picture would help and I'm out of ideas on where to even source that.

A Crawford 20 or 30 or even a 10 will look just like the larger stove. They are all part of the same series. They are very well proportioned, tastefully nickeled stoves. So if you find a picture of one of those, then you will know what the 40 looks like.

That is correct...I've searched for Crawford stoves period and haven't been able to find one in a 10,30,40.or 50. I just want to get an idea. My father said that the mica windows are shaped like a heart. I found that interesting. Agian, I cannot find a Crawford stove anywhere period. After 6 hours of looking up every way I can think of, I cannot find a single picture of one. It seems odd that there aren't any.

Here is an old picture off of craigslist of a Crawford 12 Base Heater. It's not the best picture in the world but you can see what it looks like.
