Dayton 4C826 blower on Hitzer 50-93 needs speed controller

I don't want to dial the RPMs way back, just to an acceptable level.
As you mentioned, there is not a lot of difference from high to low
with the new motor.

I sent an email to Grainger tech support:
Folks,
We have a Dayton 1TDU8 blower that we need a speed control for.
Please recommend a product for it.
Thanks,
Rick Larsen

Reply:
Hello Rick,
Thank you for choosing Grainger.
I apologize. I spoke with our Technical Support team and Andy explained the Low-Profile Blowers, like 1TDU8, do not have speed controllers.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Further query:
Corinne,
Thanks for the speedy reply.
Does this mean that we cannot use a fan motor control like
item #1DGV2 on this motor to limit the rpms?
Thanks!
Rick Larsen

Hello Rick,
Thank you for contacting Grainger.
That is correct. Thank you for your patience.

Looks like from the reply that the new replacement motor cannot be
adequately speed controled.

Looks like you might have to go with a different blower unit if you want to have more control. Several low profile blower options with speed control towards the bottom of this page: http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/fireplace.htm Prices seem pretty reasonable.

]IT WORKS :!:
McGiever,
I trust you whole heartedly :!:
Got the KB switch today and installed it. Had to use the "minimum speed"
adjustment to get to the required low speed.
Result is a nice quiet running motor AND hotter air being expelled from the stove :!:
Less coal being burned.
JohnB,
I would pick up one of these speed controls for your stove and ditch that dial-a-temp.
To ALL, thanks for the great advise :!: :!:

What's the down side to running these new motors at low rpm? I'd like to have more control but I don't want to be frying a motor every few months.

I ran the old motor on the low speed of the dial-a-temp for the last 6 years
with no problems.
I replaced the motor because I thought it was starting to go. WRONG :!:
It was packed with coal dust AND cat hair :!: :!:
I now have a spare blower. If the new switch did not work, I was going to
reinstall the old blower.
I truly feel that running it at almost the lowest speed will not harm
the motor.

From what I've read on different sites some of the new Chinese motors will stall if you get the rpms below a certain point. Must be some reason why Grainger doesn't recommend running them through a variable speed switch. I bought one of those switches on Ebay today so I guess we'll both find out one way or the other.

Fred,
What did you use for screening?
JohnB,
With the blower on the dial-a-temp I just couldn't get the
air warm enough to really heat the house. On the new controller
for the last 3 hours the house is now up to 71*. The last couple of real cold
days it struggled to reach 67*.
I think that I will take my chances :!:

No downside to using the motor speed controller I recommended.
It's all good, besides lower speed you get a cooler running motor (from lower amps)...cooler means longer motor life, because heat is the biggest enemy behind lack of cooling air and lack of lubrication.

Interesting! I'm heating a 250 year old house with several inside walls currently stripped to the vertical planks. Outside temp is 22*F, stove is running about 375*-400*, flue pipe 180* & Dial-A-Temp is on low. House is 76*+. Once I get the walls all insulated & buttoned up I should be able to keep us toasty with the stove running 300* on cold days. If lowering the blower speed gives us another 3*-4* room temp I'll be dialing the Hitzer way back.

We're in a 2400 sq ft log home and we really have never struggled with heating.
The stove chugged along with a setting on the thermostat of 4 to 6 and we just varied
the speed of the blower depending on how cold it was outside.
You should be toasty once you get buttoned up.
