Dayton 4C826 blower on Hitzer 50-93 needs speed controller

PostBy: agcowvet On: Sun Nov 11, 2012 9:01 pm

Spec sheet says it's a shaded-pole motor, so I thought a ceiling fan control would work.

The one that I tried, didn't. Purchased at Lowe's, "Lutron" brand, FSQ 2FH DK. This is advertised as a 'silent' control, ie, reduces motor hum. Three speeds, rotary knob, like a dimmer switch, but discrete clicks, Off-Hi-Med-Lo-Off. The motor ran full speed on Hi no problem; Med was turning maybe 10% to 20% normal, and Lo didn't rotate at all.

Suggestions for something that will work better? I don't mind either putting it into the junction box on the back of the stove, or into a box complete with stub cord and controlled receptacle (could use that with box fan in the summer!)

Thanks much
Jacob

No, just figured I could prevent someone else buying something that wasn't suited for the job at hand. Also figured I might get more answers with a more specific thread title.

I think the silent controller means it's not meant to make the motor 'hum' as some fans do when not on 'high'. I don't know how they do that, must be they pick certain settings that don't resonate? IIRC triac controllers clip part of the sine wave off, so it has more 'off' and less 'on' time, but at the same frequency.

Didn't see anthing like your controller for sale today, but only made it to the big Blue Box which isn't exactly known for its depth of stock of somewhat unusual (or non-made-in-China) items.

Okay guys,
The Dayton 4C826 blower has been replaced by a Dayton 1TDU8 and the
speed controller the came with the original 4C826 motor does not limit
the speed on the new superseded 1TDU8.
The thing sounds like a jet flying thru my house. The cats are hiding
under the couch and the wife says she can't sleep with the noise :!:
Does anybody have a solution for the new blower motors?
Thanks,
Rick
PS - I just hit an online site for these blower motors and a little blurb
under the description indicated the new motors are not recommended
for speed control. Why does Hitzer sell the new motors if you can't
reduce the speed????!!!

You can slow that fan motor down, it is a PSC motor. Just don't slow it too much or it will stall and self destruct...which is why they discourage slowing it down.

Using ordinary light dimmer is taking a big chance to inadvertently stall the motor and that will cost way more than a quality motor speed controller. :)

This will not let motor stall while controlling speed:

Thanks :!: :!: :!:
Bought it and at this point will try anything.
Don't want to limit the speed too much, just
enough to lower the noise.
Thanks again,
Rick

My Hitzer 50-93 came with the Dayton 1TDU8 blower unit but mine is pretty damn quiet. If yours sounds like a jet I'd be wondering about the bearings. I control mine with the Dial-A-Temp the factory ships with the stove.

JohnB,
It's not the bearings in the motor. Its the high RPM's and the large amount
air that is being pushed through the stove that is causing all the noise.
I've tried 2 "dial-a-temps" and I'm not able to reduce the RPMs or the CFMs
on the new motor.
After reading the tech sheets for the old and new motor (see attached) I'm convinced
that the new motor is not able to have the RPMs reduced as on the old motor.
On the old motor you could reduce the amount of air being pushed from 210 CFM
to 68 CFM by using the dial-a-temp.
On the new motor you can only reduce the CFMs from 222 to 198, which has the motor
running at a rather high RPM which is unsuitable in the noise department.
I have not heard back from Hitzer, but I think they have a problem with what is an
acceptable amount of RPM range that comes from their "replacement" motor.

Since we have the same blower model I imagine mine is using the same motor as yours. The Dial-A-Temp works on mine although there isn't a huge difference between the high & low setting but I don't find the blower to be particularly loud even running full pop. Still it would be nice to have more control over the blower so let us know how the new control works out. I wonder if dialing the RPM way back with the newer blower unit will shorten the motors lifespan??
