Is there an easy way to set the boiler on the base?

I installed my own 520 and I had a very hard time setting the boiler onto the base. Is there a procedure for doing it without too much trouble? I set the boiler on it's side and the base on it's side, then I cemented the base and slid the 2 parts together and then using a 10' bar and a come-a-long attached to a beam I hoisted the unit upright. It was stressful. What do the pros use, a special hoist or something?

I just installed my boiler myself allso; I took a 24 ft aluminum plank and set the end on cinder blocks at the same height as the base so when we rolled the boiler down the plank on steel pipes we just rolled it right onto the base then rolled the whole unit to where it was going to live.. it was fun

Ted, your boiler is at least 30 years old. Did you get it from Advanced Energy Systems by chance?

The boiler weighs 800 pounds and there are many unique ways to get it on top of the base. I move them using the 3 inch top outlet. An installer might bush that opening down and install a welded ring to the top of a nipple and use a hoist. Some people raise them a corner at a time using blocks until they get the right height.

I put a coat of boiler cement, the pliable stuff, on and then worked quickly before it hardened. Once it was upright I was able to seal all the edges inside the grooves. I almost forgot I used a couple 3" straps to hold the 2 pieces together while it was being assembled.

Yes I bought it last year picked it up in late september and spent couple weeks cleaning and painting it before bringing it in and assembling it, Dave at advanced energy used a chain in top bushing to load it in my dump trailer for the ride from warrensburgh.

My buddy Dave. I'm waiting for him to come down here so we can have lunch together again. Has he cornered the stoker market for the entire state of NY yet?

If he marketed western NY he'd make a bundle, I have about 20 people sold on EFM stokers but the local dealer is very hard to deal with and doesn't know anything about coal. I gave them the EFM phone # I have a feeling I'm going to be hoisting more boilers pretty soon. My friends come over to my old house and can't believe how warm it is for less than it costs to heat a trailer.

Dave is spread thin. He travels to distant states to remove/buy/install old efm stokers. Every once in awhile someone just wants it removed, free,.........Dave shows up.

From what I gather, the number one reason for trashing a stoker is because the owners get too old to empty the ashes. One option is to fabricate a smaller combustion chamber and use the optional oil burner.

That's exactly the reason I got my stoker, the guy's son said he wanted to give his dad a break from the coal routine and had an oil burner installed, it was about 1/4 the size of the EFM. I don't know for sure but I have a feeling the son was the one doing the work

Funny you should mention that as that was the mian reason i used to lose customers, that or they died.

The comments remind me of my wife's grandfather. He built and lived in Allentown in a literal tar paper shack which had an outside hand pump, and an outhouse until the day he moved out in 1990. He went completely blind in the 1920's, but that didn't stop him from having a huge, well manicured garden, playing cards or the piano or even tending to the 4 pot belly coal stoves inside.

He could maintain all 4 stoves by feel and smell up to the age of 90. The floors were just boards and there were burn marks on the boards from dropping coals, but he always kept heat in the house.

yeah he is always out when I call him but he was great to deal with he has probably about 25 used stokers that I saw, when we picked mine up he has lots of knowledge and lots of parts so if anyone in central new york is looking he has product

I just installed my own. I put the two pieces together with my Kubota. Took about 15 min. No probs.

I moved mine myself from one low basement to another and used my engine hoist with the chain running down through the top pipe into the boiler itself wrapped around a heavy bar to lift it. It worked great except since the top hole in mine is toward the front once it's picked up it tilts back about 30 degrees. I moved it myself though with no problems. I also loaded the boiler onto the truck with that hoist. I bought it for about $200 but you can rent them for $15 a day. Just be sure to get one with a wider base. The legs of mine are a little too close together but it works.

I just used an engine hoist to set mine also. Took about 20 minutes tops to set . Because the legs are tight you go in from the side and put a block in the middle. After the hoist is out of the way you can take a 2x4 and lever up on the one side to shim the base level. Scott
