i wish i would have kept better record of my oil consuption. however i do remember buying a half tank in oct, and another half tank around this time in nov. (could never afford to run her almost empty.) at about 125 gallons per delivery, id say im doing pretty good!! and im heating the shop now, never did before. so i have to agree that one ton of coal is in fact equal to 180 gallons of oil. i took alot of critizism when i told the guys at huntin camp i bought a coal boiler and though i was going to save about 50% vs. fuel oil. these guys are long time fuel oil burners. sun shines on a dogs a$$ once in while

Fuel oil is what $4.00 and some change per gallon. Even at $4, thats $720.00 worth right? and you burned one ton?? Awesome

People only ask about the economics of my coal burning when the room is empty.
They are curious about ways to reduce the oil bill, I recomend insulation first, then come over and see what I have done, no converts yet.
Burning coal in an automated way takes, as we know, facilities investment, and material handling plans.

Ya i learned the hard way no life long fuel oil burner wants to hear how some young buck is going to cut his heating costs in half with coal. went over like a lead cloud.

Tough sh*t for them, put the savings in your pocket and let them keep burning the shiek's gold. I used to burn 200+ gallons from Oct 1.st to the first week of December. Just did a quick count, should hit 1 ton tomorrow or Tuesday since Oct. 1st. 200*3.70=$740. 1 ton = $280.

I have everything set on 71...sometimes I bump the living room up to 73 if we are watching a movie.

I can tell you that burning coal vs fuel oil isn't even a contest both money wise and heat wise. Coal blows the doors off of both.

I will be at 1 ton here in another week. started Oct 10th

also keep the house at 71. occasionally 72 in some areas.

Same here wiz a heated shop is something just a couple yrs ago i thought would never happen. i cant wait to see how it does when really gets cold. seems to only do better with the more heat calls you throw at it

Folks have been exposed to the heavy government line about how evil coal is all the way around.For whatever the reason,people are loosing the ability to think for themselves. I think the government is very happy about that plus their damaging message seems to be getting thru.Glad to hear you are enjoying the Keystoker.They are great boilers and well supported right here in Pa. Fired up after install Oct 12th.

Burned thru right around 1.75 tons. (with DHW) (should use around 12 tons for season, 15 incl summer)
Set at 68-70f

With oil set at 62-65f used close to 1500 gals last season. (Imagine what it would be like at 70 or 72f??)

One of my closest friends is a nut for alternative savings.
He thought coal was impressive but for some reason it never caught his eye enough.
He bought his house closer to 8 years ago but the heat needed to be upgraded Id say around 3 yrs ago.

Went with some type of eff heat pump or something?
He did the install himself to save a few k$$, and the thing crapped out during the winter....jeez.
He got it back running after having to supplement with space heaters etc for a good week or more.

Not sure what his electric bill is, but it has to be shocking (maybe I'll ask him)
All I know is that I am sure it is probably damn near close to my monthly average bill for coal...i.e $400-500/month +/- (cold 6 months)

Only issue now is,
his house sq ft is 1000, mine is 4000



And right now with the economy, he is not in the position to even think about upgrading
(prob be too ashamed to have to upgrade after he spent tons on the new heat/AC pump....I know I would)
