[quote]But would workfare be legally considered to be a form of indentured servitude or slavery?[/quote

Is that any different then paying increasing taxes without representation to "own" property?

I think workfare is a phenominal idea myself, I am not againt the government helping those less fortunate, but giving handouts is UNACCEPTABLE!
No workfare would not be slavery, If a person coud not ligimatly find a job, they go to an office much like a welfare office.
They fill out an application stating their skills, much like a job application.
and the government gives them work based on his/her ability'
A person with construction background could work on infrastructure projects, at less pay then they would if they found thier own job but at a higher rate then somebody with no qualifications.
Somebody with no skill could work in a supervised group picking up trash on the side of the road for crying out loud, I wouldnt mind that! Its all these damned handout that rattle my chains!

They should have to sign a waiver that this is a work at your own risk job, for crying out loud people sign them to go bungee jumping, parachuting, and all kinds of other things! if they want to have money in their pockets they will do it!
When I first started my home improvement contracting business, I was VERY slow the first winter. Myself and my only employee would wake every day at 7:00am drive to a roadside, park the truck, and each take a side of the highway ad pick up all the aluminum cans we could find. We would keep filling bags until around 5:00 in the evening, walk back to the truck drive up the road and load all the cans (or any other metal objects we could find) and take them to the junk yard. We averaged about $200 per week each, not a full time pay BUT we survived!
Even when I was a kid, growing up in the antracite region I collected coal in buckets and sold it to the local reidents to burn in their hand fires.
Eventually I had enough money for a motorcycle, and I had a welder that I sold coal to make me a buggy I could hook up to my cycle to make my job easier, doubled my output!
Thats the difference between me and those people I guess I have too much damned pride to take anything without earning it ;)

You are correct and you should be proud of your work ethic. But I have heard many times that you cannot sign your rights away. And therin lies the problem. Lawyers!!!

There are people in the world that would and will argue that any form of pay for work is a form of slavery or servitude.

How is getting paid to do work slavery? Especially on a voluntary basis?

If someone stuck a gun in your face and said "Work or else", that would be slavery.

Heck, even many libs like myself go along with programs that allow people to work for their check. The problem is as stated lawyers but I would guess that with much thought that could be fixed, it would be no more slavery than it is extortion now for the tax payer to have to foot the bill to support the slugs that don't but there would even have to be agreements with all those that do work & employ now since they should not be able to be laid off & replaced by a lower paid welfare worker, I think you all know that would be the first thing that would happen if not blocked.

You do realize that there is already a penalty paid by employers to lay people off right?

You think maybe Microsoft is going to get rid of some software engineers and pick up a few welfare queens?

You live in a world I don't even recognize Sam.

Jpete, if you would read what people write rather than putting your own spin on everything (the world according to Jpete) you would have read that welfare jobs would be given by order of ability, while you might have been replaced by a welfare queen I don't think a software engineer would.
