But if isolationism is not desired, and worldly friendship and trade is, then by having military base presence around the globe and bombing people and warring with them at will we are sure choosing an odd way to win friends and influence people.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Nor is isolationism desirable for a healthy economy.

People that throw the term around like that are just trying to shut down any discussion.

I thought you were against any involvement with other countries?

"Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations — entangling alliances with none." ~ Thomas Jefferson

"Involvement" doesn't have to mean coercion via guns or money or using the CIA to stir up revolutions.

It could just mean buying things we want/need and selling them stuff that they want/need.

No it doesn't have to involve those things but it almost always does.

We are in agreement here FWIW. Random drone attacks probably create more extremists than they kill.

As I mentioned previously, I tend to love history (probably why I majored in it). I recall a great quote from a Vietnam vet on the effectiveness of our air attacks there. To roughly paraphrase, "If you kill a Vietnamese man's water buffalo, you upset him and likely make him not support us. If you accidentally kill his wife/kids in the attack, all you've done is create another Vietcong".

Not exactly winning the hearts/minds.

But it's SO much easier to win the hearts and minds when you can just sweep them off the ground. :D

I have considered the possibility I may be the idiot for trying to change things.

As much as I hate to do it, I'm coming around to the "can't beat 'em, join 'em" philosophy.

HURRICANE SANDY UPDATE: As you know, America is the first country to send aid when other countries are in trouble.
It is highly appropriate that we now send THANKS to all of the countries that reciprocated for our help with their disasters, misgivings, social turmoil, & poverty by sending to the United States of America monetary and physical help when Sandy ravaged our East Coast leaving dead, homelessness, and pure disaster.

Listed below are all the Countries and World Organizations that are giving us gracious assistance.

Please assist in thanking these entities by passing on this email so people all over America can join in and THANK our neighbors, to whom we have invested BILLIONS!!!!

First on the list is…
