But if isolationism is not desired, and worldly friendship and trade is, then by having military base presence around the globe and bombing people and warring with them at will we are sure choosing an odd way to win friends and influence people.

"Involvement" doesn't have to mean coercion via guns or money or using the CIA to stir up revolutions.

It could just mean buying things we want/need and selling them stuff that they want/need.

We are in agreement here FWIW. Random drone attacks probably create more extremists than they kill.

As I mentioned previously, I tend to love history (probably why I majored in it). I recall a great quote from a Vietnam vet on the effectiveness of our air attacks there. To roughly paraphrase, "If you kill a Vietnamese man's water buffalo, you upset him and likely make him not support us. If you accidentally kill his wife/kids in the attack, all you've done is create another Vietcong".
