There were so many thousands of stove models made that without pictures of the grate and flue setup you are unlikely to get an answer.

I believe an "Oak" stove is a direct vent stove.. not a baseburner or base heater.

Read this thread:
Base burner stoves

there are photos, and diagrams that whill help you deterimine what is a base heater or baseburner.

Does the 'Round Oak' stove you found have a vertical back pipe with a flapper [damper] to control exhaust flow. ??
If so, it may be an 'indirect heater' , the added back pipe extracts a lot more heat from the exhuast before it goes up the chimney.

I see stoves for sale on the web, and they just show a front view, like craigslist or ebay.
I look at the area below the ash door and wounder if there's room for smoke/heat to pass around.
I'm at a loss just looking at the front view.
I'm thinking of getting a base burner and restoring it. I never seen one in person.

That is an, "Oak," stove. That means it is a direct draft stove, designed for general use with wood or coal. Round Oaks were hugely popular in the mid west and the Round Oak stove is found in a plethora of designs and models. They were made for almost a half century and many people use and collect them. They are also very common.
This one, however; is pretty neat in that the base is perfectly round. Most stoves have a square base.
And to answer your question, no it is not a base burner.

I have a 20" Round Oak (or at least part of one) I know the one I have was a wood only stove but they are nice looking stoves.
