Having never ventured outside of Maine, he had some strange stuff in his rock collection. One was a big piece of coal, bit coal I would guess, as well as some gold flasks in a vial. I know gold is not as wide spread as it is in New Hampshire, BUT in a stream not far from me, gold was discovered and listed in Maine's gold discovery sites list.
I was just curious if coal was ever found in Maine and in what town? I know in the early 1900's a prospector claimed coal was just under the surface in Northern Maine but we all know that was just a prospecting speculator being a con artist. I know low grade iron ore was discovered at Katadin Ironworks, and I know a variety of other precious metals have been found (and quarried) in the state. I was just curious if the block of coal my grandfather had, might have came from Maine.

You may be a coal addict when you are more concerned that you can find coal and not worried about the gold. Repeat after me. "I have a problem, I am addicted to coal" .
