Explains a lot about the people on the west coast. I never realized there were so many tests.

They did really dumb things with nukes look up operation plowshare. There were plans to use atomic bombs to create a harbour. They actualy used a bomb underground to frack for natural gas but, the gas had too much contamanation in it. Big suprise there

There were plans to level mountain ranges so the great plains could get much more bountiful rain.

There were plans to set off nukes underground in huge salt deposits. Then heat could be extracted from the molten salt for commercial or industrial use.

Wow, those all sound like incredibly stupid uses for nukes.

There's lots of "downwinders" in southern Utah and other areas.

http://catastrophemap.com/downwinders.html

Then there's the 1950's film "The Conqueror"
"Of The Conqueror's 220 cast and crew members from Hollywood, an astonishing 91 have contracted cancer"

Exactly. Especially when the holder of the keys is not a rational person but a religious zealot. For an excellent lecture on the potential Iranian nuclear capability and it's implications for the world watch the lecture hosted by my former employer, JHU/APL. A must watch.

See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RPHvdY1SpI

BTY there are many such lectures, just do a YouTube search on "JHU/APL Rethinking Seminar Series"

One reason the frequency of US testing diminishes in the later half of the 1990's is the available of super-high speed computer clusters. Outstanding work by physicists and computer engineers to create software models of nuclear tests. Much cheaper and safer.

I saw a story earlier this week that the US had once planned to detonate a nuke on the moon to intimidate the USSR during the cold war.
Very interesting. Also thanks Yanche for your youtube link to the JHU/APL lecture. It was long but very informative and thought provoking.

I wonder what it'd look like. I think they should do it now just for the cool factor.
