When I fired up my new Alaska 140 Auger, I had fans in the windows and the house wide open on the west side of the house only. Then opened the bilco doors in the basement which are on the east side of my house. Cranked the stove and let it bake off. Air went from upstairs, down the steps to the basement and 'washed' all the stink out the bilco doors. Probably had the house open for 30 minutes or so. It was cold, but then I closed everything up and the house bounced right back.

You have oils from the steel, as well as paint that needs to off gas. At first it will be strong for a few hours and then within a day all should be better. The first time the stove gets really cookin' there will be a little more and then you are all set.
