That's true. I might have gone but I'm short on AK's and body armor.

If he wanted them to be covered, he would need to pay an additional $800 a month. So, Wal-mart helps us all out with their great prices, but then forces their employees to go on assitance and jacks up our taxes.
Tough to gross billions and not take care of your people. And they are not allowed to unionize either...
If Wal Mart were to "do the right thing" and give all their employees health insurance the cost of their product goes up and some other company would seize on that. Wal Mart goes out business because they can can't compete and all these workers end up working at this new company in the same boat they were before. That's business whether you like it or not. Because of this law you're going to see less full time jobs.

Can you ask for $80k? $100k? $150k?
When we have nearly 25% real unemployment, will the state be able to afford to keep you?
Maybe your job can't be shipped to Mexico, but it can certainly be privatized. I'm not far from a for profit prison housing Federal prisoners.
And not that I'm holding my breath, but we could certainly reform the legal system and cut that 50k prisoners down to 25k and then we only need half as many CO's. Then what?

2 differences here. #1- I am not a CO. #2- We dont "demand" salaries. We have a salary scale, and when need be that scale is frozen. I worked management for 4 years inside and didnt get a single raise in pay while everyone that I managed continued to make more money. So, I made the smart move and went to a different department and went back to union. In a few weeks I will test for another management job, this one better then before. I am all about taking care of MY family, so I do what I need to do, and bust my ass, to make a better life for my kids. And like I said, ANYONE without a criminal record can get the same jobs.
They have talked of privatizing us. It fell through. Those private prisons seem to have their fair share of problems and things get bad pretty quick. However, the 1 private fed prison close to me pays more per hour then the state prisons do, and you have the option of making $3 more an hour, or getting insurance. That wouldnt be so bad either. As a matter of fact, when I retire I might just head over there and get a job. Get my state pension AND work there and take the money since I will already have the benefits.
We are opening a new prison in 2013 and have broke ground on another one. I dont see them closing them anytime soon if they are building MORE. I have about 10 years to go before I can walk away, and I am not worried about any of those things you mentioned happening in the next 10 years.
OR....we can just open the doors and let em' all out.
I didn't take this job for the union. I took it because I was offered it fresh out of school and it was a great opportunity that not a single person on this forum would turn down. NOT ONE. I have sat and watched people come and go because they couldn't handle the stress, because they got knocked the f*ck out, or because they just realized being out numbered 20-1 by bloods, crips, latin kings, skin heads, etc. was not a working environment they wanted to be around. Joe Taxpayer, which by the way includes ME as they take $400 a check from me, is free to come in and do my job whenever they feel up to it.
What happens if one day suddenly criminals start being good, productive citizens and we dont need state, county, and federal prisons or police officers??? Well, I guess then I will just get another job. With my skill set I will be ok. I have been offered employment in other areas such as Public Welfare, Parole, Conservation, etc. and turned them down. Worst come to worst and I am unemployed, we will be ok then as well. I not one of those that lives pay check to pay check. We could handle it for a few years, or head north and live off the land on my property.
Opportunities don't find you, you find them.

Kevin,
You are free to take a Civil Service test, pass it, go to the academy, and walk inside the razor wire fence with 2500 of the states finest rapists, murders, and molestors. Then you too can have union and good health insurance and retirement at 50. I dont see many lining up, and we are constantly hiring with a huge turn over rate. Some dont even make it a week.
Dont piss and moan about people having union jobs with good insurance because you either cant, wont, or dont want too. I will gladly state the taxpayers pay my salary. Joe Taxpayer has the same opportunity to work the same job I do. Maybe not exact position as what I do requires college, but anyone with a high school diploma and some military can make bg bucks. If the tax payers dont like it, let them come inside and handle the 50,000 citizens we have confined for YOUR safety. Tax payers don't like our State Police making $57,000 right out of the academy either...but they dont seem to complain when they need them.
For what it is worth, I have never used the union for *censored*. And I vote Republican. But I also know my job wont be shipped to Mexixo and as long as people continue to break the law, I will have a job.

Everyone hates a cop until they need one.
