I believe it has been shown there is an uptick in police accidents because of the laptops in the car.

Distracted police driving is a serious problem, especially with all the computer technology in a modern police car. The industry has responded with systems that only allow keyboard entry when the car is stopped or moving at some slow speed. Some local police departments near me have put in place policies that require police to wear seat belts and only make keyboard entries when the car is stopped.

Police in Ohio are required to wear seat belts. I've never paid attention to whether they do or not.
Cell phone use is another matter. In Geauga County, if a sheriff's deputy isn't talking on his cell phone as he's driving down the road, it's probably because his battery went dead. ;)

When I did my ride along with the Citizen's Police Academy, he was running plates as fast as he could. Stopped, driving, it didn't matter.
