They would come in there in hordes and run out the decent people by their loud complaining, ridiculous demands and by starting fights with other patrons. They don't tip and most of them try to scam out of paying for the meal. If you are a white waiter. Forget it. On the days they would get their welfare money it was an animal house in there. The waiters would all try and get out of waiting on them if possible, even the black waiters.

I had one fat, rude ill mannered heifer refuse to pay for a steak even though she had eaten most of it. I had been run back and forth to the table countless times with the finger in the air, "excuse me, excuse me." This is also a ploy to show power over a poor, helpless waiter. Anyway, she demanded a free meal and I told her," Since you ate half of it, it couldn't have been half bad. No refund." Well the scene that followed was beyond description. The manger gave her a free meal and forced me on pain of being fired to apologize to her. The humiliation I and other waiters had to take there, will be remembered for the rest of my days.[/qu

I lived with blacks on a ship in the Navy, where I was a minority among blacks, latinos, and filipinos Do you have any black ancestory in your family? Black and Native American I can answer yes to all of those questions. I bet you can't answer yes to any of them. You ASSUME a lot Most white people don't know anything about how black people think or behave. I have a lifetime of knowledge of this subject. This makes you a scholar on the subject

I was a Supervisor for the Railroad and we were in Missouri. There was only four of us on our crew, but one guy was black and was from West Virginia. We went into McDonald's for lunch. As many of you know, the employees there are always told to take the orders from the Drive-Thru first, and we were there at mid-afternoon (a slow time) so this one woman was doing both the Drive Thru and counter.

I ordered my food and was fine, but then the black guy went to order an a car came through the drive through so she said, "Sorry sire could you wait a minute", and that was all it took. he went off; He started yelling at the top of his lungs, "It is because I am black isn't it? You'll hate blacks here don't you? You think I am just a dumb N and you don't want to wait on me..."

He was way out of line, there was no reason to yell it and being from the North with a Maine Accent, I booked it out of there not wanting to be caught in some hill-billy town and talking funny. The thing was my Latino Crew Chief and Indian mechanic ran for the truck as well, so we were a pretty diverse crew.

As I said, I saw it first hand and there was absolutely NO REASON to even think a racial issue was at play.

I have never considered myself racist but I have never considered myself to be politically correct. Everyone is the same

Sorry if I sounded racist, I am with you Flyer5. However as the following stories relay, it has become ingrained into them to hate whitey. I have traveled and worked as have the other Mainers in here it would seem. I have been on the receiving end as a whitey. I assistant coached a college basketball team and had many conversations about why they felt persecuted. And why it was ok to reverse it. Eye opening experience into human nature, not black only nature. I to grew up with the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy and Micmac Indians and many races at the local Naval base. Never occurred to us they hated us and early experience showed they appreciated being treated the same as everyone else. One young black sailor from Atlanta told me on returning from leave how much he had hated Maine when he arrived. Then when he was home and a guy was shot dead in the stands of a high school basketball game, he realized how "quite" it was. Racism is a 2 way street, but not in today's political climate.

I'm sorry working in the mess hall isn't the same as being a waiter. Your condescension is typical. Be glad I don't go into the other side of this coin which is subliminal white guilt which is rather disgusting to me. Just start a conversation with any black person about race, all you have to do now is talk bad about Obama. You don't have the concept that in the black culture everything, I mean everything is filtered through the prism of race. Nothing is without a racial slant or connotation. You don't have a concept of that, most people don't. You don't consider what to think, buy or accept by being conscious first and foremost that you are White. You are comfortable in your arms length distance from all of this and you can feel smug and assuage your guilt when the subject of slavery or how the Indians were treated etc comes up.
Black people are well aware of White Guilt, much more than those who suffer from it are. It is exploited often. It is automatically assumed before the first words are spoken.
I challenge you to talk about race in an honest manner with any black person and see how the conversation ends. It will end with you being put on the defensive and trying to prove by your patronizing the other party about how you are not a racist. How you are not guilty. I would bet a pay check on it.

In the South Black and White people grow up together, worship the same way, eat the same food, visit each other in their homes and as a general rule have gotten along fairly decently, despite all of the movies and bigotry about Southerners otherwise,

I was born in Memphis, there were no riots there. Not even when Martin Luther King was shot. I know I was there when it happened.

The bottom line is that it is almost impossible to have a discussion about Race in America, because as long as the victim/oppressor card is played no one is going to be honest about it. Instead of listening and trying to understand what someone is relating here, fingers get pointed and accusations thrown. "Thou art a Witch!!"

Until one side can put away the lust for revenge and entitlement and the other remove the mantle of false guilt, this issue is going nowhere. It is only going to get worse.

Waiting on humans...is just that...no matter what setting! William, this attitude has been going on since the Civil War. Yes you are right that there is racism in the north and Boston more then most cites. Part of this is because of the usual group dynamics that seem to always happen in societies. Boston being (second only to NY at one time) an immigration port, the newest group to immigrate or move in is the "low turd on the totem pole for lack of a better example. It happened to the Irish, it happened to Italians, Puerto Rican's, ect.....ect....It seems to be the way it is for some in societies to always have to feel better then some other group. It's sad but true and allot of the time, it's the group that was the bottom rung now oppressing the new one.

Your description of life in the south is quite rosy though and while that may have been your experience, the reality of "In the South Black and White people grow up together, worship the same way, eat the same food, visit each other in their homes and as a general rule have gotten along fairly decently" is from your white point of view and if it was that way at all, it has only been that way for no more than 30 years at best. Before the late 60's I would venture to say it was quite different. You may have lived in the same city but things were very segregated. You did not eat together in restaurants nor use the same drinking fountains. You worshipped, maybe the same way, but in different Churches. You may have shared a bus but ask Rosa Parks? This way of life down south in particular was the very reason for the civil rights movement.
