We can help our fellow americans, but I have heard the democrats Scream and cry that we paid for two wars on a credit card. Now is there chance to pay out this money, but cut it from elsewhere since the credit card is full ;) . That would probably appease the tea party and it would go through in one swoop.

Great point! Wonder if that will appease ALL from both sides of the fence?! I think we should help those in need, however, a counter argument would be that "you choose" where you live and plausibly knew your plight! SAD...but true!

I was also going to go there. If you can't deal with it then move. It might make beach homes more affordable again. Give someone else a chance to take the risk and buy one. Maybe I could buy one and have a coal jamboree on the beach for everyone

Back to what I was wondering, are all the democrats going to man up and cut a bunch of spending to pay for this aid for the victims. I mean I heard the screaming liberals whining about paying for the wars on a credit card. Like I said the card is full

Approx $89,000 / home and business effected. Sounds like a deal ( NOT! ) its not like anyone had insurance. So are we bailing out the insurance companies? And I would probably be fine with the aid if I thought anymore than 10% would actually reach the people who need it.

Wars are started by man, a natural disaster is just that "nature", one has nothing to do with the other. Hopefully they will be careful & have learned from the Katrina fiasco where they just handed out checks to anyone in line. There have been many natural or in some cases fires started by man these past few years, floods & droughts, that's what disaster relief is all about IMO that's an area where Gov. is needed. If you live on a natural breakwater & don't have flood Ins. then shame on you, same goes for businesses, roads & utilities plus replenishing funds used by organizations that help should be first. From what I have seen some areas are gone & if they put sand back MN is just gonna take it away, some places should have never been built upon to begin with.

Should the Federal government mandate flood insurance then subsidize it and then pay for it when it all goes wrong?

That's what homeowners insurance is for. The gov't should pay nothing. If you didn't have insurance, you learned a costly lesson.

Homeowners insurance doesn't cover floods.

And flood insurance doesn't cover floods unless both your neighbors got flooded so it sucks to be the first and last guy on the street that are underwater!

My parents lost almost everything they own last year with the floods. My father used pretty much all his retirement savings to rebuild. He is 74 this year and still working almost full time 4 days a week. Now he will never retire he did get some ( very little from FEMA flood ins ) but it cost a lot more than what he got to rebuild.
We actually look at what happened as a blessing because the home was totally gutted and redone. While working on it my father was taken off his blood thinners because the doctor was worried he would cut himself. He also was being treated for sugar. Now he is no longer on blood thinners and his sugar is in check no treatment. He lost about 40lbs. And hasn't looked this healthy in a long time. The old duct work and heating system was removed and replaced with a new system. My mother suffers from asthma and has also felt healthier.
So instead of sitting back and saying poor me who will help he rebuilt the place with mostly his own money. And his own blood and sweat. They had help from family and friends which is how it should be.
Not saying Sandy was any kind of blessing but people need to be responsible more for themselves.

What I said Eric, before being selective quoted was that the Gov. should help with infrastructure & the non-profit relief agencies like the Red Cross & such. And yes some places should IMO never be built upon like natural sandbar breakwaters, most cities that were built in flood plains like along the Mississippi & mostly New Orleans, nothing should be built below water level. Every time man tries to trump Mother Nature sooner or later man is gonna be smacked upside the head.

I agree unless the person building assumes 100% of the risk if they do.
