Got two loads of rice coal. One for me and one for my grandfather. I use a Keystoker KA6 and he's using a Harman Stoker Boiler. Both of us are getting probably 60% ash. I'm running about 3-4 5 gallon buckets in a day, and all but overflowing my factory ash bucket. I just installed this boiler so I'm pretty sure I have it set up right....I'm around 13 turns on the red nut but I need t get a draft gauge to check my draft...may be a bit excessive. His Harman he's had 3 years and this is the highest ash output he's had. Is there something about our setups or is it the coal? Very few klinkers....just large clumpy ash....very little dusty ash. Thanks for any help.

Ash content is normally measured by weight, not volume. If you are burning 4 5-gallon pails of rice coal per 1-bushel ash tub, that isn't unheard of. I suspect your ash has a lot of small clinkers, which makes it take up more space.

I'll measure my next input and output.

If both of you are getting poor results with different boilers, I bet it is the coal.

Weighed my input and output of coal and ash and found I'm almost 31% ash back....clumpy with very little fly ash.
Split Vein specializes in "reclaimed coal." Mostly from the old Glenn Burn culm bank in Shamokin. There was a reason that it was discarded back in the day.
There is nothing wrong with your equipment. It's their coal. It's loaded with rock, trash, and dirt. 60% plus ash is not unheard of with reclaimed coal.
It's cheap and you will get what you pay for.
Cheap coal= lots of ash=very hard to burn. When I tried burning the rice coal it wouldn't even burn. I had to mix it 25/75 with good coal from either Harmony in Mt. Carmel or Lenigs. If you don't mind cleaning it yourself and emptying the ash bucket 5 times more than normal buy the cheap cheap reclaimed coal.

I'm most definitely not going back there. Th BTU output is low and ash output is high.....just not happy with the product.
