Besides gun laws, what can be done to actually prevent

I would expect that any person, teacher or not, who went through the trouble of obtaining a CCW would understand the responsibilities that go with it.

Not that I could get a CCW in RI, but I don't even know if I would want one just due to the potential headaches.

Obviously, some people, no matter what the training might not make the right decisions.

Not long ago, there was a MA state trooper who shot his neighbor walking her dog because he "thought" she was a deer.

That's a guy who I would say can handle the responsibility of being armed yet he's out there every day with a gun.

I think we both agree that allowing people to defend themselves is much better than requiring them to be victims.

I would even feel better if they at least had cans of hornet spray ( like was posted somewhere here) or mace or stun type devices. Something I just can't stand to hear about people being killed without even a fighting chance. I do agree a good start would be to minimize access. I would think would be the least amount of cost. Having bullet proof glass on the entry doors. Having 2 levels of entry and a metal detector. I would like to see at the very least get rid of not allowing staff or teachers from carrying. They would not even have to have any guns there just the criminals not knowing would be a deterrent.

People keep saying (not just here) that the armed security guard would be the 1st to go and then the same thing as Newtown would happen all over again.

We have undercover police all over. Would a person who looks like a regular teacher be so difficult to use? Sometimes it's the simple answer to the tough questions goes unnoticed.

I think the most cost effective way is a armoured foyer entrance like you go into at a State Police barracks..1 way black glass, blast doors that can be locked behind you to trap you inside.

Draw bridge and moat too.

Just arm a few teachers or the principal.

With all the kids and others going in and out and sometimes with staggered classes, foolproof security is just about impossible.

I said arm the teachers in the beginning or at least allow them to be armed. Just the possibility of facing someone armed can be a good deterrent. I agree if we can spend the money on the courthouses and SP barracks for the security we should be able to do it for our schools. I never did understand that. The SP Barracks and courthouses have a lot of armed personal and tons of security at the entrance but yet very little security at a school.

I think "Cap" hit on the head. If we can blow the money to have a trooper sit in his car by the interstate watching road construction, we should be able to afford to spend it for a "Trooper" in each school. Put a one cent tax on each bullet sold in America. Make the government pay the tax also. Also when did they stop putting wire glass in schools? When I was young the joke was that schools looked like jail houses, everything is pretty now.We have forgot function before form. Now I see floor to ceiling windows and no wire glass like they use to have in school windows. :(

I hear that. In MA, we are the ONLY state in the union that uses staties INSTEAD of flagmen. I thought libs wanted to help the downtrodden?? Why not hire FLAGMEN at $9- $10/hr instead of paying a statie $85/hr (NOT an exaggeration either!!) to sit in either an air conditioned, or heated car burning taxpayer fuel? Reason is simple - UNIONS. Mention the word FLAGMAN, and the police unions get whipped up into an angry frenzy.

Lots of things could be done differently in this state ....

Could be worse. You could live in RI where they have a cop AND a flagman. :)

Actually, it's usually a woman because politicians wives/daughters/nieces need jobs too. :D

I-95 passes through Delaware for about 20-25 miles. On my way through Delaware yesterday. I passed through several construction zones, with state police at the beginning of each one. I don't no why because there are k-rails and no one could get to the construction side of things. Anyway if it's good enough for road crews, we should be able to do it for our kids. My wife and I were talking about it last night and both of us think that it's only a matter of time before a terrorist did this or worse in a school. We need to get ready. :(

Nancy lanza's decision to introduce her son to the nra's world of irresponsible gun ownership, obviously backfired on her, and cost many innocent human beings their irreplaceable lives.
