Does dual Fuel (DF 520) mean NATURAL GAS???

Does dual Fuel (DF 520) mean NATURAL GAS???

PostBy: chimley On: Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:21 am

Can anyone tell me if the dual fuel feature on a DF520 will work with natural gas?

I heat 1,000 sq feet of residential space. I use about ONE TON a month in the winter, which is about $200 worth of coal. I have NG available in my neighborhod, I have to think $200/month should be close to covering a monthly gas bill. Even if it is more, there is a trade off of convenience.

Appreciate ANY feedback.

It must be possible, however you DO understand that you can't leave the gas burner unprotected and installed. You are talking about 'short' money if all you burn is a ton of coal. It might be advisable to consider a NG boiler as an independent source. The cost to retro, if possible, would not be worth the aggravation. ......penny wise, pound foolish..........plus, I would not even consider NG near a burn pot with an open flame, NO MATTER what safeties it had on it. Do you like the KISS philosophy?

If not, why not?    Let me see....you state that you have NG burning anyway, why do you want to add a burner to the DF???????????

thank you whistlenut for your reply.

I do not burn NG....not even hooked up. I am considering using the DF option to burn gas instead of coal.

I realize the 520 is primairily designed to burn coal, and anything else will not be as efficient. My intentions, if possible, are to use gas exclusively with my 520 and see how it goes. If successful I may put in an actual gas furnace to operate efficiently.

The DF has a "door" that manually opens and closes over the oil gun...open when burning oil, close when burning coal.

don't shackle yourself to the dwelling heating source with solid fuel -Image when you have the opportunity to install a nice simple NG appliance

1 Ton per month for a 1000sf place seems a bit excessive to me. I heat 2700sf with a DF520 with a domestic coil and no hot water storage tank and use 6 ton per YEAR. Wondering how that much coal is being consumed... Also, I'm not sure what NG prices are but would imagine if that much coal is being used the gas consumption would be high as well. Just my .02

efm's oil burners can be converted to a power gas burner. I don't know why your DF could not also use NG. call efm and ask about a power gas burner. It may not be very efficient, so you might want to have a separate gas boiler or only a gas boiler.

sorry my square footage is more like 1,800. Not 1,000. Sorry about that.

Thank you all for your ideas, I'm gonna call EFM later this week.

I never called EFM about the gas gun because I already know the 520 will be terribly inefficient burning anything other than coal.

I spoke with two friends using NG with similar sized homes and I am looking at $1,400 - $1,500 annual fuel cost. I'm paying over $1,000 for coal....so it seems like an easy decision.

I hope to convert for less than $1,000, using a new Yorker oil boiler I have and adding a power gas blower.

That's the plan. We'll see how it goes.

That sounds like a good option, with low natural gas prices on your side. I was heating with the oil gun on my EFM back when oil was .86/gal. When prices went up switched back to coal and haven't looked back.
