SF Harmon wood/coal boiler

Hi, I am new both to this site and trying to run a SF260 Harmon coal/wood boiler and any help is greatly appreciated. This is the boiler that I have

I am having a problem trying to get the draft set right so that the coal either doesn't burn up so fast or that the coals go out. It seems there is no halfway with this for me. Everything is manual, its not one of those that are fed mechanically. Is there suppose to be some kind of damper on the pipe that goes to the chimney, I am thinking about that since the only way I have to control the draft is with the ash door, and the 2 knobs on the feed door.

Ah, yes. You should have a barometric damper if you are burning coal. Some use it for wood also but this is a contentious issue. Other would say you should have a MPD or manual draft or butterfly damper in the stovepipe. Or both. This can be contentious issue also. You must have something to reduce the draft because it is sucking your heat up the chimney. And you have to come up with a manometer to measure the draft. Sounds complicated. Do a few searches on here and learn from what has been written before.

There should be a manual for the draft settings for that Harman. Others have them and will weigh in when they see the post. That will tell you how much draft it calls for.

Nice help Klook... that link leads to all kinds of helpful stuff on the Harmon for him. I can say that my friend in Pembroke MA. had one of these and it worked fantastic with wood (he never did use coal because his wood was free), Im personally a coal guy but i was impressed watching and feeling the heat this thing produced with wood!

first thing i notice, is you don't have the automatic ash door draft controller setup on it. It works off an aquastat/relay setup from harmon(Johnson Contols). Get it and install, second i use a barometric draft controller, it works great on these stoves. i burn nut coal go 12 hours between tendings.

Secondly do you have a Harmon installation manual for this boiler? if not its available at Harmon website, down load it and use it to install Draft controller setup.

your boiler looks just like mine except When my father in law (before he his alzheimer's disease worsened) installed it, he decided for what ever reason to not install the Aquastat controls, or the barometric draft in the flue pipe, I did find some of the parts in a box, and plan on buying the barometric draft, like I said I knew it need something. By the way, I am a she not a he, lol, and with all the help that everyone is giving me I think I can get this done.
