I pulled these out of my furnace today I've been pushing the furnace a little harder than usual with the colder few days we had, along with burning red ash with more fines than nut size in it. I've been purposely forcing it to burn loads pretty thick with fines so I'm not left with a half ton of fines at the end of the season... Thats a quarter for size reference..

Lightning, what coal are you burning?I got 5 tons of UAE last year(or that's what my dealer told me it was)but it sure don't burn like the last load of UAE did but maybe that's what the vain was producing at the time,I don't know but my ash probably looks like yours minus the big clinkers, and the fines are real bad(#700 of coal with 40# of fines almost 6%)maybe thats not bad but I think it is. I've tried to find out where my coal is coming from but my dealer just says he don't know or he'll say out towards the east side somewhere lol.. He's a rock dealer and coal is one of many rocks that he sells

UAE coal is dusty, NOT full of fines.. at least from the Mine is it snot, I get a TT load each year or so, and it is dusty, but has only a small amount of fines, like 5% ?
If your retailer pulled your delivery from the bottom of the bin, it would be full of fines.

I transport my coal with 55 gallon drums. Last year, 5 drums would get me about 2100 pounds. This year, I was getting 2400 with 5 drums. I first thought maybe this year's coal was more dense but now I'm thinking its saturated with fines.. So that would be about 15% fines..

fines would not cause clinkers. fines would restrict the air flow causing more unburned coal and higher coal consumption. Higher heat or poorer coal would cause clinkers.
Higher density coal = more bone or rock = higher ash. More ash, the more it is likely to fuse into a chunk.
When I burned some lousey coal in my AA, I was getting clinkers so big, I though I might have to mix ex-lax with the coal..

I'll take clinkers any day over these rocks! Blaschak seems to have a bad run as well ... at least for '11 when this was bought ...

Wow Rocks? I haven't found any rocks yet. I'm sure I've ran a few thru it, seems inevitable since where coal comes from, but none that I found. I've only found bone looking fragments and fused clinker material..

I've been burning hot the last couple weeks because we are getting real winter temperatures this year. I switched a couple days ago from Blaschak to some Kimmel that I want to use up to free up the spot where it is stacked. WELL -- clinkers galore! I'm going back to the Blaschak for now and will try the Kimmel again when the weather gets warmer.
No rocks, though. Smitty must have to pay extra for those, my dealer knows people in Maine can't afford the extra charge.
