dumb dogs

My lab flagged the animal control officer down after he went for a stroll (package delivery man left the front door unlatched). They call me at work and say they didn't even get out of the van, just pulled up along side and opened the door and he jumped in. They didn't charge me; round trip 1/2 hour.

Dumbest thing he did was chase down a porcupine on a Montana hunt. He just kept on it. "Hey?! , chomp, Hey!? , Hey?! , repeat... I couldn't see what he was chasing, but you know when they're up to no good... "Uh oh. No bird! No bird! No bird!"

Luckily, I had 2 buddies with me: one to hold the body, one to hold his yap open and me to pull the quills with a leatherman. They were under his tougue, down his throat, in his muzzle. Lovely.

Took about a half hour to get them all out. He kept hunting, though - I have a picture of him somewhere, posed with a limit and a red pin-holed muzzle. Dumbass Rubber Dog.

I don't think he likes his lion costume...

I don't have a dog now. Here is my daughters American Staffordshire Terrier, Molly. Full breed and papered. She can be clumsy. Always bumping into people while walking through the house. She's a good dog though. Very protective of the grandchildren. Sometimes I think she believes she is their mother.

I've had dogs all my life but this one takes the ticket for being the dumbest most anoying one I've ever had. (the white one) My wife keeps reminding me that I picked him out at the shelter I should have gotten a poodle we love him though.

Got this photo from my daughter today, Lucy had her snip snip operation.

So glad to see Rottie owners here and so many dog lovers. Honda (the rottnwilder) was a rescue. My daughter worked at the ASPCA in Manhattan and he was brought in by the Humane Law Enforcement. He'd been tied in a backyard in the Bronx with a Pitt and was emaciated. His jaw had been broken years before and he had teeth growing out of the roof of his mouth and tin foil and dirt embedded in his mouth. The ASPCA paid for thouands of dollars of oral surgery. He is 10-11 years old. She adopted him, but lived in a 5th floor walk-up in Brooklyn at the time and his bad hips wouldn't allow him to do the steps.To make a long ugly story short, when she moved back she asked if we would consider adopting him.He's been here since August and has been a great addition to our family. His tongue hangs out the side of his mouth because of the injuries and he looks like something out of a horror movie, but we love him and are glad to be able to give him a safe home for as long as he has left.

Rain (the springer spaniel) is 4 years old and as psychotic as they come. He is a great hunter with a soft mouth, but a little short on the brain side and has serious short term memory loss.He's been known to jump off cliffs into rivers and barks at us if we go upstairs and come back down.

Ours does the same kinda thing. If I go drive up to the corner store, then drive home 1 minute lator, he's barking his head off as if I am a robber or something. He can't remember our cars!. We got him from a shelter, after he had 4 previuos owners in the city. He just needed some wide open space to burn off all that energy. Yep, Rain does the same thing.Whimpers, barks, licks our hands as though we'd been gone for days. Arent they fun.

I also wanted to thank all of you who have rescued or adopted from shelters. Please, if you want a dog check out your local shelter first.There are so many whose lives are ended unnecessarily.We don't need any more backyard breeders, especially of Rotts and Pitts,or other "dangerous" breeds whose puppies end up in shelters or worse. There is breed specific legislation being passed everyday across this country and we will soon not be able to own those breeds that are considered dangerous. Dog fighting is rampant in this area and there are no law enforcement agents to help. Please, please spay and neuter and don't let your female have a litter because she's sweet, or you want you kids to see puppies.

My daughter managed a small shelter for awhile where any Rottie or Pitt that wasn't returned to owner with a few days was to be euthanized. She outright refused to euthanize for color (those big, black Rotties) or Pitts unless they were vicious. She finally got the Board to agree that they could be sent to approved rescues.They didn't like it that her euthanasia numbers were decreasing. The idiots couldn't get it through their heads that adoptions bring in revenue and euthanasia costs money.

Sorry didn't mean to lecture, but this is an issue that tears at my heart.

I was right up until the point I saw the ridiculous contracts they expect you to sign particularly the "they can take the dog at any time for any reason". Under some of the contracts I was reading there very few homes that even qualify for these dogs... I understand there is lot of people doing a lot of good work in these shelters but a lot of them are also on the fringe. I'd strongly suggest anyone that is looking into a shelter dog to carefully read the contract and make sure to check up on the shelter you are getting it from. What I/you may think is right for a dog may not be their idea, for example I've seen some of these people state if you get a cat it has to be kept indoors..

I'm sure this image of my previous dog would be highly disagreeable to many of those people... the poor dog.

Thats a good point, Richard. Its as if some of the "shelters" out there, don't want to part with any dogs at all. Case-in-point: My wife had picked out one dog from a specific shelter, but on the "Adoption Questionaire" one question was how do we plan to keep the dog in our yard (and yes, we MUST have a yard to adopt this dog from this shelter). Well, my wife just circled the answer for "Invisable Fence", even though we did not have one. I was willing to install one, if that was required.
Well that answer DISQUALIFIED us from getting the dog. "Too cruel on the Dog" was the response. The "correct" answer was, We were supposed to put up a real fence around our entire property! Give me a break, we live in the woods! We had to leave that shelter and never return. (Especially after my wife gave them a "piece-of-her-mind"
We found the above Lab/German Shepard the next day, at another shelter, no questions asked! Just give em a check for "food and such". Never regretted that decision.

Every dog I've had had (all 2 of them since I was about 7) has been quite good at staying where they should be. The last one was superb in the picture above. When we'd go to a 1 acre plot I have access to on the river she was always within ear range. The very first time I had her there when she was only about 9 months we all jumped in the car to go get breakfast, just left her there. She watched us go down the road, then went and layed down I assume as that was where she was when we got back.

This new pup I have is proving to be handful though. Wouldn't consider doing that with her but then again I haven't had nearly the amount of time to spend with her as I did the white one.

You are absolutely right. Some of them are way over the line, and I think this is more true of rescues than local shelters, you have to read the contract carefully. In many cases, the dogs are denied a great home because the adopter can't pass the test.

Well ours is as dumb as they come, see dumb dogs , but he just made the local newspaper! His name is Mikos. Maybe we should rename him "Groucho"?
