Yea and there seems to be a big rush on large magnets. There seems to be a epidemic of this happening. They just don't make boats like they used to.

Well, it's about damn time there is an article defining this. Except it was pretty well defined in World War II when Hitler developed the StG 44. I actually had to school a co-worker the other day on this. He was talking about how the AR-15 is fully automatic. It took all my will power not to punch him in the face. Instead I opted to explain the differences between an ASSAULT Rifle and a Semi-Automatic Rifle. What's sad is he "claims" to be a gun owner.

I run into these people all over the internet, and in the general population of MA. Very infuriating ... I completely understand!

this pretty much explains the main delema in my mind, well done smitty... The idiots in DC need to establish a better way to define an "assault weapon" (I could care less how "military" a weapon "looks" or "feels"), yet this seems to be everything to the suits in DC  I want specifics regarding how a weapon functions, shoots, loads and how much it can be loaded with to define the definition of an assault rifle before they start mass banning stuff. They need to get smarter about all this stuff before making decisions! I do feel some changes and some regulations are due....I just want it to be reasonable for the majority and I want it to encompass a broader spectrum then just "Guns" (IE: mental health programs, schools, etc.)

My definition of an assault rifle is any rifle that is used to commit a crime against a law abiding person. There weapon used during the Newtown shooting was an assault weapon. The 80,000 Ar types that were purchased in the past month are just that ARs Armalite type rifles. They are sport rifles, defensive rifles, target rifles.
Just like my car it is used for transportation and recreation. Some have used a vehicle just like mine to assault persons. That does not make them all assault vehicles.
If a person is for any kind of new laws or restrictions before the laws currently in place now are enforced you are ignorant to what is happening. If LEOs or military or feds try to disarm law abiding citizens that should be considered treason against the constitution all the way up the chain of command. And they are the ones that should be arrested. Its simple " shall not be infringed ".

I disagree with some of the article though. Current military M16's only have 3 round burst mode. The M16s used today do not have fully automatic functions. So It is wrong to state that even the military version of the AR15 (the M16) is "machine-gun" like.

Give me a bolt action .50 cal over a Small semi rifle any day!

Anyways it is sad that these so called educated news reporters and politicians are so ignorant!

I did fall in love with the M16 though while serving in the USAF . While serving on the borders we had blocker plates mounted on our M16s so we could only use it as a semi auto.

Even in the military not many carry a true fully automatic firearm.
