Godin Large Round Fired UP!!

Just in time for the coming cold snap, the 1978 Godin is up and running. Started her up with Cowboy Charcoal and layered Nut on top.
Spun open the air-inlet and MPD wide-open, so the fire could breath. The coal is now filled to about half-way, maybe more to the single
rear flue. Closed the air-inlet down so there is just a small gap. MPD is at 45 angle. The stove was at 600 F above the fire-door. MPD
is 18" up above rear flue. Temp reading above MPD was 150F.

The Godin sits in the rear of the house, the mighty Vigilant II in the central room.

The side temp above the fire door reads 775 F... that's a little scary... so I finally loaded the chamber to about 5" below the exit port...

It took me all night to get aquainted with the Godin.... I could not get the blue ladies to stay.
the fire was deprived of air...spun the air-inlet 3 times, and 5 mins later, mission accomplished.
I just closed the MPD and set the air-inlet back to one revolution...

Looks good, no puff backs, no surprises... the Godin is kicking and so is the Vigilant II. The 1850s house is darn comfortable...

Ok, the start-up burn is 14+ hours so far. With the strong draft chimney, the Godin is burning at a side temp of 800F, with MPD fully closed, and 1 turn out on the air-inlet. Just recharged the fire-pot with two chicken feed size scoops of Nut. Then I opened the fire door to remove some ash.
Not much ash to remove as yet. The air-inlet is at 3/4 turn open and MPD closed... more to follow.

Oh brother... I went into PANIC mode.... after the rechage, opening the fire-door and checking the ash, closing it, and shutting the MPD and opening
the air-inlet 1 complete TURN, the stove pipe near the collar jump to almost 500F and the metallic temperture guage fixed just above and right
of fire door read 900F!!! :shock:

Fearing the fire would over heat the stove, it was necessary to shut the air-inlet knob. I opened fully the MPD, with the idea of letting the heat escape, after a time I closed it half-way and eventually full close until the temp reached 700F and 175 on flue pipe.

There is a cold front coming (severe), wind is kicking up, cap on chimney, very strong draft capability. The air-inlet knob is set at 1/4 turn out
and MPD is closed... the firepot is half full, temp on fire door at 690F, NO BLUE LADIES however.

With the MPD closed, I want to get the LADIES to return. I suppose another 1/2 turn is required to ignite the gases :?:

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.!!

One Godin user props a butter knife under the top door to supply some over fire air for a time.

Very nice stove! I would love to add one of those to my collection. Almost had one earlier this week. More pics and some video would be greatly appreciated. I wish I had some advise to give, however, I'm sure other forum members burning this stove will chime in very soon. Keep us posted.

2nd Night... it's all trial and error... this stove is a different animal than the VigII. The Vig has huge windows and so it is easy to guage the fire, plus
I can maintain it in 10mins or so... hopefully I will get better aquainted with the personality of the Godin..

What I don't want is to over-fire the stove....

Keep us posted, this sounds like it puts out more heat than the glenwoods. Burn Times and temps plus air settings. eBay has brand new godins for sale around $1300 plus shipping. Over seas though ;(

The problem you will find with a Godin stove is to adequately clear the ash and get burning coals down to grate level. Put Godin in the search box to get a lot of threads.

Right! Found some really good stuff.

Using those posts, The Godin is running stable. I found the right tool to pull the ash onto the grate and break down the clinkers. The tool fits
through the fire door grate. It has small flat edge and a bit of a bow at the business end. The tool easily reaches the back and sides of the fire
pot, with some pulling and twisting the, shake down operation is quick.
