I think that's ashame that you've pigeon holed law enforcement in that area.98% of the Sherrifs & Troopers are very professional & a credit to their chosen profession out this way. The only time I've ever seen them any other way is when, unfortunatly, they have to deal with A-holes that think laws & rules are for everybody but them.
I think you should leave it up to us to decide what the quality of LO is in our respective county and state. I instructed my sons when they became mobile(truck) to be leary of town cops and sheriffs dept. and respect the state police as they are profiled and professional. They never had any issues but I grew older and that view has changed. I have seen troopers act like real people, imagine that, and the county sheriff is a friend that is as solid as a rock. 98% might be a little strong anyplace in the country. But as you are a little bit of a public service junkie like my bro in law, you view them in a glowing light and I view them with a skeptical eye. I have observed that volunteer fire depts and local cops attract a certain type of person. Do we need them? You bet, but I don't have to worship them as hero's and submit to their authority whenever they demand it. Local govs realize they can get a little giddy with all the power. I have observed tiffs between the fire dept and the town cops over who controls the scene! Barney Fife as I said, on both sides! It is up to the leadership to recognize and control these individuals, but sometimes they become the leaders in small communities.
And since this is about gun control, There are not many of them I want to rely on in a situation where I need a gun. State Police, yes, locals no.
I would submit many also get involved for the benefits. Gov job after all. And job security, everyone is speeding, every day.
