FANS!! Grr....

What is it with blower fans? I can't keep them alive. I've been through two stock Harman fans because they would develop a high pitched whine so last year I stepped up to a ball bearing, permanently lubed fan from Grainger and now it is making a high pitched "dry" whine like a bearing is going.

I even started using furnace filters over the inlet to keep as much dust out of the squirrel cage area as possible.

I'm getting a little PO'd here....any suggestions?

I run a Grainger combustion ball bearing fan going on 2 years now with no problems. After year one I pulled it apart trying to grease the sealed bearings with a grease needle and found out I was wasting my time I now let it just run it and oilthe other motors on my Keyskoker that have oiling ports.

and you thought their weren't going to be any drawbacks to a stoker vs handfed

1 year does sound a little odd, ship that thing back for refund, I found this thread which seems to give alot of good info and advice that will help you alot more then im able

Yep, get hold of grainger Jeff--I hope you're a receipt saver---in the mean time, pull out the old box fan, she's chilly out there.

Grainger should definately let you return the motor...

I bought a new Keystoker furnace this fall
. the Dayton convection blower failed day 1
the replacement motor they sent me never got installed because you could not turn the shaft by hand
. the third 1 failed after 2 weeks.
the common denominator here seem to be a bad batch of motors
. the fourth 1 ( problem free knock on wood) has been running fine
this didn't cost me a nickel. . as it was all under warranty
however it was extremely frustrating!... I feel your pain
... I couldn't help but notice tho... that all of these Dayton motors are now made in China!
...pretty sad.

Are you finding a lot of junk in the fans curved vanes? I'm still using the original combustion blower on my harman boiler. It's 10 years old. Many of the harman magnums I have bought and refurbed over the years have had original blowers over 10 years old too.

Keystoker 90K, 10 years old, sames fans. Bought brand new.
Leisure Line Hyfire I, circa 1995, same fans. Bought used 5 years ago.

I remove, clean and oil them every spring when I shut down.

So far, so good. Knock on wood.

I used to, that's why I started using furnace filter material on the intake.

It seems to have "fixed itself" for the time being but you know how that goes. It'll probably fail completely on the coldest day of the year.

What are you using to lube the bearings? I use Amsoil 20W-50 motorcycle oil ... because that's what I had laying around. So far so good on year 4.

For what? The pieces of your seized fan?

Supposed to be permanently lubed bearings. No provision to lube.
