Question on Hard Coal.
I have two local suppliers that are charging the same rate for hard coal. One supplier leaves it exposed which means snow and rain hits this coal. The other supplier has it covered. Does the coal that is exposed to the elements hold water, which inreturn will give me less coal per ton?

Just curious - still learning my friends.

I'm sure it will hold water, but it's not like a sponge and hold much water only slight moisture. And look at it another way, the wet and uncovered coal is having the dust washed off  :gee: the wet coal won't hurt a thing

One place I went weighed how much coal you got, then reduced it by a percentage for "water", was about 5.8%. I have no idea where that % came from. Was about $9-10/ton.

They are not a big heating coal supplier, mostly comerical sales, but was good quality coal. And $10 is $10

My supplier doesn't cover his stock either and I still get some dust, but would prefer it to be rinsed by the rain. Never got a load soaking wet, but it's going to dry in the bin anyway..

I've put coal in the boiler that was wet and it burn the same, smells a little bit but it's not going to hurt either way.

If the price is the same see who you like, seem to get along with better and go from there. My supplier is the nicest guy and real accommodating with delivery and never leaves any mess.

Let us know how you make out!

So I'm assuming you can still buy coal by the truck, and not bags? wonder if it's cheaper that way. not sure if it's available in my area of CT, but I'll bet you can buy it that way in PA.
