That's exactly right Richard. Is it legal, Yes. Is it appropriate? No. Why do "many" people feel this way? Look at the news on any given day. Maybe these incidents happened just as often in the past as they do now, I don't know, but in this day and age of instant internet news feeds, people hear about allot more then they did in the past. Maybe ignorance was bliss but in this day and age incidents get reported within hours of occurance.

Guys like Chester can laugh about how it gets folks riled up but hey, it's your gun rights on the line here so to me, it's serious. But hey, by all means keep it up if you think that's the way to go. Let me know how it works out for ya.

I can get away with it where I live. But I do get some strange looks from the neighbors at the shop when I bring my AR from the parking lot to the shop. Never had the cops called that I know of at least. A lot of times I will bring rifles or shot guns in so I can clean them. So maybe they are just used to me here. LOL

As you & I know Dave, somebody local that people know could walk around Marathon with a weapon undisturbed, but don't let some stranger do it. We both know we're involved in two specific geographic situations with this whole discussion. That's what irks me that some just don't get that.

I don't walk around with a weapon, I do however like to have my lawnmower with me wherever I go. It just makes me less anxious and nervous knowing I am ready. I hate it when people look at me funny just for doing what is my right. And now you know why I try to avoid places with stairs.

Richard, we gotta get you a midsized tractor with a real nice time piece for the grill--I'd be pushing for an 8N or something along those lines. ;) Perhaps an "Uttermost Leonardo Script Cream Wall Clock" for the grill.

Been absent lately, recovering from surgery and such, but I had to weigh in on this. I think this is a dumb thing to do, plain and simple. If you want to exercise your rights, open carry your handgun in a holster. Nothing intimidating about that. And, if the cops are called what are they going to say? Your gun is holstered. Cant really holster an AR strapped around your back. I think I may have thought he was there for evil reasons and things could have turned ugly quick. Idiots like this are the reason the anti-gun nuts are gaining ground. We shouldnt support this behavior as responsible gun owners, we should stand up and say that is not how responsible gun owners are and that is not how we act. I carry everywhere, and no one knows. I also dont have a problem open carrying, as I said before it is usually when I am fishing as I dont like the holster rubbing on my side as I am climbing through the brush!

As far as gun free stores go, that is up to the store. I dont care one way or the other, but you will lose my business if you post a sign saying you are gun free. Simple as that. Other stores will gladly take my money and not care what I have under my flannel shirt. When I was in MI over the New Year we went to Bass Pro and there was a sign that said all guns and bows must be checked at the front desk. I had a nice discussion with a higher up at the store as my father-in-law and I were both carrying. I asked him point blank if Bass Pro was a gun free store? He told me no way, if you are bringing in a gun or bow for repair, they want you to check it. If you are carrying concealed with a permit, they could care less. I told him good, because I spend about $5000 a year with his company and I would hate to spend that money else where. He was adamant that they were 100% gun friendly.

In the town next to me a man was arrested and cited with inciting panic when he lit his cigarette with a gun shaped lighter, tucked it in his pocket, and walked into the mall. This is a mall that is not a gun free store. Some lady in the parking lot saw it, freaked and called the local police department They arrived, detained the man, and cited him for public disturbance. So, me being me, wrote a letter to the police department explaining PA open carry laws and how if I walked into that same mall with my .45 on my side, would I too be arrested for public disturbance for breaking no laws? I also reminded them that this small area did not have the funds to handle the lawsuit that I would put against them if I was. Of course, no one from the Police Department answered my questions. Either they are ignorant of the law, or they did not want to admit I was right.

I have all the respect in the world for MOST police departments. However, when you take a guy with a GED and 160 hours training and give him the power to arrest and kill, you are making monsters. I have had my fair share of run ins over the years, and I have discovered that there are just as many corrupt bad cops as there are good cops. I told my wife I should go shopping at the mall and open carry, maybe we can pay for the 4 kids college education with the money I win in my lawsuit...

For what it is worth, I typically do yard work with my carbine slung over my shoulders. No one has seemed to care yet...

Rw,

 I would have never expected such a MODERATE response. I to say that when I first read this thread I immediately wondered how this stooge would have made out if he ran into you in the parking lot while you were on you way shoping with your family. I dont really know what I would have done ... maybe one in the knee... Either way we have to realize the most people would rightly assume that the guy was up to no good and at least feel panic , and no one has the moral right
to do that , 2nd amendment or not. Hope your recovery goes smoothly.

I wouldnt actively engage a target unless I felt an immediate threat to my safety and the safety of my family. Just this yahoo carrying the weapon wouldnt concern me. If the same yahoo started to take it into a firing position, then things would be stepped up to oh sh*t level real quick.

My best bud who is a sniper tells me he has the scope on people's heads all the time, and often times they give up and the situation ends with no violence. As soon as they lift that weapon towards fellow officers in a threatening way, he pulls the trigger. There is no second guessing. Second guessing could get fellow officers killed.

Always analyze the threat level, and make a level headed decision. Never assume, but never hesitate.

Your response would have landed you in jail and a lawsuit to boot. YOU should definitely not be armed in public. And I can't find any references to moral rights anywhere. Maybe you could send me a list so I can get up to speed. Funny, if I had a uniform of some sort on, no one would care if I was armed. But just be normal and you don't look normal. Nothing says the uniform has to be legit either.

Kevin

And I get it Fred. But it is wrong to continue to allow the sheep to order our rights, a right not exercised is a right lost.

Why does the concept of discression keep coming to mind? I'm far from an anti-gunner, but I was surprised that this topic was even re-opened again. We all do what we feel is right, but few consider the consequences involved. Although maybe this kid did, with the note & all. Point being--it would/has not changed anything. This just goes on & on & on, to what availe I have no idea. He proved nothing, plus we've heard nada from him since this episode. Personally, I stay tuned into GOA & give my support to them.

It resurfaced because of my sporadic presence here. I just realized that Waldo posted that to me, so I responded.

My bad if I kicked up some underlying issues.

Nothing underlying about it Rw--like every other important decision needing to be made in this Country--the *censored* in DC are busy making themselves look good to their constituents or anyone else that is ignorant enough to listen to their bullshit. Now, Waldo??? hmmmmmm?
