PayPal Donation Button

PayPal Donation Button

PostBy: Richard S. On: Mon Dec 17, 2007 6:41 am

Edit: button and link has been removed at the moment but you can use this link to make a contribution to offset server costs and other expenses:

Make a contribution

I know I said I wouldn't be adding anything like this but I say a lot of things. I've added a PayPal donation button on the bottom right. Please don't feel obligated to use it but if you feel inclined let the cash flow. :P It accepts all major credit cards and if you have PayPal account you can use that for making a donation. Donations will go towards server costs which are increasing and towards further improvements in the services offered here.

I clicked it, but no money showed up in my account...hrmmmmm

Seriously...on most forums where you can contribute (I don't like the sound of "donate"..I reserve that word for charitable organizations) you get your name in a different color or something similar to help guilt others...errrr...encourage others into contributing as well. Personally, I have no issue with contributing to help offset costs, but I like to see what the costs are so that I can better calculate what I feel is an appropriate contribution.

You'll be getting a no ads display once I set it up, while on the subject the ads will be disappearing after X amount posts so either way they will be diappearing. I'm really not interested in singling out contributors from non-contributors.

charity (an activity or gift that benefits the public at large)

Really semantics but I agree, contribute would be better word. I'll change button text when I get a chance.

but I like to see what the costs are so that I can better calculate what I feel is an appropriate contribution.

Well that's really my business, the current server I'm on is not a shared hosting account but its not costing a me a small fortune either. The time alone if this was a client.... well lets just say I'm not cheap. :)

Understood. It's just difficult to gauge what would be a contribution that would be more than just token in nature, but as you said, it's your business so we'll have to settle for that.

Let me elaborate little more as to why i won't be distinguishing people that have contributed, I really don't think its fair to the people who contribute a lot of their time here. If for example you're a knowledgeable poster who contributes a lot of information I don't think someone else should be elevated above you just because they have donated some money. That pretty much sums it up.

As far as the amount goes I'm not going to make any suggestions that's up to you, what I will say is anyone considering this for less than $2 might as well not bother because there is a transaction fee and a percentage that PayPal gets just like you would have with any credit card transaction. Not that I wouldn't be appreciative of a small donation but so much would be going to PayPal it's not worth it for either of us.

And that brings up a great point. People who donate their time and knowledge are giving as much or more than folks like me who may soak up more than we give off. We're all given gifts and sharing them with others is the most satisfying thing we can do.

Thanks for setting this forum up and maintaining it. I for one am most appreciative.

Another site that I read quite regularly has something called the "10-cent challenge", with the logic being that if you get at least 10 cents worth of benefit from the site each day, just contribute that on a yearly basis. $36.50 or so.

I think it's great.!! It does take money to keep the server, software, etc... running and up to date and mostly the time for the Admin to edit, upgrade, add features, help, etc...

I have learned WAY more on here then experimenting myself of what works and what doesn't and hopefully helped many other people on the board. Made new friends, bought another stove, talked with MFR's, etc...kinda my new winter hobby....

The House is toasty Warm and the gas bill is next to nothing....Priceless! :)
