Fourth year of 100% hand fired coal heating, hot water is electric.

This year has been the easiest by far.

got 1900 sq ft split level built in 1970's to heat and the fireplace insert takes care of it all. Just needed a few small fans to move the air around and a vent up to the second floor. temp range for the rooms stay between 65-75 in the house. 40-50lb a day usage with outside temps in the 20's

I have had 2 out fires in 3 months and the hw heater is an oiler. I am closer too 100% but I picked 90%. The wife will use the furnace if the stove is on the down slope when I am at work, I get 12 hr burns, but Im away 12 -13 hrs. she had back surgery a few yrs. ago so tending of the hand fed is out of her realm. The pay back is great, and when I load the stove I can't help but think of the american's that are working because of it, now if only my local oil co.(small town up here) would sell coal they would have 100% of my business instead of 10%!

I burn 100% Mid October to Mid March, except for a couple of weeks around Christmas, when we tend to head south. Heat pump the rest of the year. HW is by Oil. Hope to move closer to coal country in a year or so, and want to go boiler, if possible and 100% is the goal. I answered 80%.

I've been working out of town for a couple weeks and just saw this post. 100% since October 19th, 1972.

The FIRST Arab Oil Embargo finished it for me. Yes I have oil boilers as a backup in each location, however they are not turned on, and are tested once a month.

Like Federal Express....when it absolutely, positively has to work every night, I do have a back-up. 4500 sq ft at home, other locations, more sq footage, bigger boilers.

Has one of my Coal Boilers ever failed? Not yet! I do keep belts, blowers, motors, gear boxes, chains and whatever I need on the shelf, because unlike today's "Just Right Timing", I believe in Murphy's Law and that does not work for me.

With the exception of a week at Christmas, 100% for the last three years from November to early April with my Harman insert. I've had less than 100 gallons of oil in the tank for three years now. Gotta love seeing the thermometer staying at 74°! :D Especially when I hear the neighbors gripping that they have to buy three or four tanks of oil a year just to keep their houses at 65°.

I voted 100% but it really is about 99%. I do use oil for early fall and late spring just to take the dampness out or chill off. Last oil I bought was August 2008 and most of it is still in the tank. Been sitting at 1/2 tanks for 3 years now!

Come on now, you have to work without a net. It will teach you to be more careful. I have the Keystoker KA-6 in the house for heat. Period. A couple of weeks ago I go to work on a Sunday after being home for three days and guess what, Sunday night the main motor decides to take a crap.

Oh well, the local plumber has to eat too.

I heat my domestic hot water in the summer with oil. From September to May I use coal boiler for both, domestic and hydronic hot water :D .
