Well, I broke one one my two shaker grates .... tried to put on 1.25 inch socket, no go.

Ordered new one with a new shaker grate shaking handle ... it was old and had a lot of play, likely part of the cause.

Plus I must have too much muscle! lol

Well, its burning OK -- day 2 after (I figure that ash is going to kill the burn on at least that one side).

Hopefully it will continue burning until the replacement gets here ...

I may play around with the old one once it is out .. Can't do anything with it now ... just sitting there ..

Seems to be not an unusual event..

Take it easy on that stove!!

You might want to let the Wife shake it so you don't tear it up!

Glad your back up and burning.

Those shaker handles wear out regularly and get too much wobble in them. Good to have a spare around at $8 each. They seem only good for a season or so. Good luck.

Well I slapped a vise grip on what I could and I was able to shake it and discovered a few teeth missing on the grate ... decided to shut it down .. once I shook it the missing teeth just allowed all the air to pass through, effectively killing the stove...bummer

I'll clean it out and when the new grate & shaker handle arrives ... I ordered them sat...

I just broke my shaker handle for my 983. Where do you order the handles from?

I ordered mine from a local hitzer dealer ... but I assume you got yours already (or are froze to death! lol)

My stove is back up .. the new handle is sweet 1/10th the effort to shake .. no problems

Well reading this thread here is a little tad of info, get yourself a flat washer with a 1" hole, file it till it just fits the shaker knob, slide it on the knob on the outside of the stove, melting problem solved. Shaker handle, drill and tap two holes in the square and you can use short bolts as set screws to lock your handle to the grate tight up against the washer, no more shaker handle problems. :D

I ordered two from Hitzer. They were very reasonably priced. I believe they were somewhere in the neighborhood of $7-8.
