Bend over for oil! Prices now match all-time high of '08

Guess I know where my tax returns will be going.

Don't need it at the moment - the coils are handling things just fine. Will need to fill up this April though for DHW duty.

When I need to run my furnace I just go out and buy a few gallons of diesel or off-road.

But we keep being told we're on the right path!

We need to give big oil a larger tax break & subsidies, that will fix them. Don't you find it odd how if you don't drive enough we pay more, if we drive too much we pay more, summer blend we pay more, winter blend we pay more, planned maintenance we pay more, unplanned maintenance we pay more so lets get this straight one last time, the common factor is we pay more. Oh! almost forgot the pipeline is still full of the higher priced gas, we pay more but the pipe & storage never ever has the lower priced gas so we still pay. It sounds like (dare I say it) you all would like Gov. controlled gas & oil then you could I don't know maybe blame big oil.

We are back to where it was at the end of Bush tenure which was nice for George and Dick but not the other 99% of the country. The facts are that niether of them, Bush or Obama, have much control over what happens with oil prices. So You can blame Obama and I can blame Bush but that's just moaning because the they have only a little more control than you or I on how that market functions. The halcyon days of cheap oil are gone and they ain't ever coming back I'm sad to say. As my better half (She's a Brit) always tells me, "The rest of the worldistan" has been paying these prices or more all along. You had it easy for a long time and now the demand for oil is high among emerging nations like China and India etc...and it's a world market. They are not going to sell to you cheaper than they can sell on the world market unless it gets subsidised. That ain't gonna happen because thay would be socialism! Unless we can reduce demand, it not going anywhere near what prices once were back in the Clinton times where I was bitchin about $1.50 a gal.

Really, How's that? The only control they have is putting heat on Saudi's or maybe decisions on where and when NEW drilling can happen but that isn't all that much control and isn't really going to effect prices much. They (the market) have had the taste and know that those prices can be paid (because the markets says they can and are!)
The sad truth is that we use more per capita than any other nation on the planet and we do that because we can. We are affluent and many of the people moaning about it that have 2-3 cars, trucks and SUV's, a boat, some snow sleds and ATV's and motorcycle too! It's hard for me to feel sympathetic in those circumstances. Do I like it? Absolutely not. When I was a kid I could'nt get $2 to fit in the tank of my bikes and I could ride around all friday night for a Finner in my GTO. Just being realistic here. I was lucky enough to have been born in an era and seen those days, but they are long gone and nothing and no one is going to bring that back.

PS: Smitty, I'm still only that same tank from when I put the steam boiler in 3 years ago. Prolly more then half left too! I wince when I hear that bugger fire up and usually (thankfully) I'm not here and traveling when it does.

...its not just OUR govt....

But for what its worth....US oil conpanies are subsadized by American tax dollars.
these are companies that have record breaking profits quarter after quarter... year after year.
....think about that....

Crazy money for gas/oil. Last time we were at this price, oil was 140+ per barrel. We are at 96ish now, so looks like the
refiners are scoring now.

Yep I hear you on that part for sure. You know how that one goes whenever big money is concerned! I truely don't understand that at all. Especially when the Oil big wigs throw up their hands and say Hey gosh It's not out fault that we made billions last quarter! Like I said, they have had a taste and like an addict, they ain't ever going back! You're right, we SAS shouldn't be funding them.

I agree Paulie, what's up with that one! Should be somehwere around $2 and some at those pbl prices. There will always be an excuse.

As I said or at least implied it's time for big oil to take some action on their own, they no longer need subsidies IMO, they could & should use common sense & rehab refineries one at a time when possible, they should lead the charge to get rid of ethanol. As everyone they are profit oriented but there has to be a point where enough is enough, being in a business that produces what we can't do without stands in the way of all that. All in all back in my GTO days gas costs somewhere between 35 to 48 cents a gal. but my brand new 67 GTO rag-top with the 360HP & 4 speed was sticker priced at 37K & I got it for around 34. That fiver for gas was a lot harder to come by with the hourly pay in the 60s but they also didn't get the yield or sell all the bi-products from that barrel of oil. Those were the days that we are never going to see again & I think we have to resign ourselves to those facts, glad I hit those times in the time of my life that I did. All in all profits are profits & the amt. of pay used to go up with inflation but for a long time now only a very few have had that luxury.

example.... I will use rough numbers.

take 1 barrel of imported oil.... at 100 dollars
... a barrel is 31.5 Imperial gallons.... or 42 United States gallons
The raw cost for this or oil is about 2 .40 $ / gal
at best... 42 US gallons of oil can be refined into 20 U.S gallons of gas (road gas)
... so if imported oil could be trans ported and refined for free... ( which we know it can't be)...
Raw price per gal of gas would be $ 4.80 per gal....
Now if the national average price per gallon is $ 3.60... they would be losing their ass on gasoline sales.

yes... there is also other products produced buy that same barrel...
but I think you get the idea
...its a big numbers game...and we pay either way
