For most of my life Diesel cost less than Gasoline, but now

PostBy: lsayre On: Wed Feb 06, 2013 7:41 pm

... it costs about 20% more per gallon. And since #2 heating oil is very close overall to Diesel fuel, it's price is going through the roof also. Can anyone explain why decades of fuel price relation history have been turned upside down?

I think it's the dollar. Ever since the price first started to really spike up in '06, that was a warning that the economy was not really as good as it seemed.

I think we're bordering on collapse any minute. The stock market is setting records. How can we have a high market with high fuel prices? It's all downhill from there .... Just my thought on the subject.

The outrageous part is there is no road tax on heating oil and yet it is still higher than gas.

I can't understand this either, especially since home heating oil doesn't have to meet the ULSD specs. Maybe it's that purrty red dye they put in it?

The government is probably getting kickbacks on the high prices to make up for all the tax revenue they lose to online purchases.

Too many people are brainwashed with this carbon footprint rhetoric to consider coal as a heat source. I've had people give me a hard time because I'm using a "dirty" fuel to heat with. I don't know how people overlook the fact that their heat pumps are powered by coal fired power plants! Or heating with oil that has to be shipped halfway around the world! Then I get to hear from ill-informed people that I'm "creating a hole in the ozone layer".... Funny, I didn't realize the burning of coal produced CFCs! :hammer: And another favorite "Aren't you going to get black lung from that coal?!"

Ok so I also was wondering this especially this past summer when driving from PA to FL on vacation.

I will say that in one state (and only one state)

Diesel was still in fact less than regular Unleaded.

That state would be South Carolina.

WHY? I don't know that either but Diesel was around 20 to 30 cents cheaper than gas in that state.

Cross the border into NC or GA and it gets flopped around where diesel is the same or slightly higher.

SO state taxes play a role in this but....

In the end I still don't get it.

When I was a kid, gasoline typically cost $0.349 per gallon, and Diesel fuel typically cost $0.279 per gallon. That's 20% less, vs. today's 20% more.

The oil companies made a conscious decision to start exporting "excess" diesel and #2 fuel oil to Europe and Japan in the late 1990s. If you remember gasoline and diesel were both at historic low prices in the 1998 - 1999 time frame in the United States. This allowed the oil companies to instantly make a quick buck (windfall profit) by selling these fuel products in both Europe and Japan at significantly higher prices. These same oil executives quickly discovered they simultaneously created an "artificial" supply problem in the United States. If you remember your supply and demand curves from micro-economics 101; even when demand remains constant, reducing supply will drive the supply/demand curve intercept (price equilibrium) up. And if demand goes up too? The price goes way up. Bottom Line: Why sell products cheap here in the United States when you can sell them for top dollar overseas? And as an extra bonus screw your existing customers here in the United States too. Welcome to the global economy.
