Why cement your black stove pipe

They both worked well. I prefer the type in the tub that has the grit in it for black pipe (more like a mortar than a paste in a tube) I was skeptical at first, but the joints went together well, and are leak tight.
I believe the last I used was the Imperial Grey cement and it's holding up great. Rutland makes similar stuff too.
